Someone on reddit compiled a very long list of features which were discussed in NMS previews (or appeared in trailers) that are completely absent from the final game and it's pretty damning. Sean Murphy was entirely responsible for making the claims he did, and it's clear that many things were either never developed or couldn't be made to work properly so were dropped.
It doesn't seem unreasonable to blame Murphy for the hype when he was largely responsible for generating it. While he might not have been outright lying, I find it very difficult to believe - given the state of the finished product - that he wasn't aware he'd struggle to deliver what he was selling.
I've played enough over the last week to realise that it's seriously flawed in almost every respect. I've been persisting in the vain hope that something interesting might happen but it seems increasingly apparent that whatever that might be probably isn't worth the effort.
