i love francis.

Exactly. It seems so weird when the people who've actually bought it, for the most part, are pretty happy up in space.

This.
I bought it and have probably played about 15 hours so far (more than i've played any other game for a good 9 months). My "review":
There are parts that are really incredible. There are parts that are total shit.
I'm probably getting a little bored now but i still got 15 hours of entertainment for £50 which is a fuck load more cost effective than going to the cinema or the pub and they still might bring out updates which will make me pick the game up again in the future.

Yes yes yes but Bannerlord

This adequately describes pretty much every computer game I have ever played.
People who get this upset about games probably need to go outside a bit more.

That's kinda my rule of thumb. If I get > 10 hours out of it, then it's worth it. Hell I can spend $60 in a pub in SF in ~4 hours easily. I realized this when I bought Overwatch. $40, I've played for a while. Never touched it since. Was it worth it ? Sure

Never played the original - worth it?

Nah, not at the moment. It's fun but hasn't aged well, despite what the neck beards online say.

This new Skyrim mod thing - does mod mean PC only? Or will Xboners be able to play?

Just got myself Gameboy Micro.
Looking for Gameboy Advance games.
Please, offer me what you got over PM.
Might be a bit picky, but let me know.
Cheers!

The folks you refer to as Gamers exist in every following of anything that is produced these days. Whether it's games, films, music, whatever. There'll always be a bunch of over-opinionated know-it-alls critising and putting down every aspect of it they can find.
It's a mistake to lump those who have negative opinions on the piece in question in with people like that.
Scope creep is perfectly natural and happens all the time, I understand that. Not hitting stretch targets is normal, and to be expected, by definition.
Like you say, the guy running the project often doesn't get the technical nuances of what's going on and can say something that's misleading and/or incorrect. Sean Murphy is not one of those people however. Being an ex-developer & technical lead for previous games kind of rules him out of that.
I'm not saying it's a conspiracy either, I'll hold my hand up and admit to feeling that he purposely dodged giving a direct answer to questions regarding multiplayer in order to keep the hype-train rolling though.
People who say the "hate" Sean Murray are, I agree, quite OTT. And it's not behaviour that should in any way be condoned.
I don't understand why people who haven't bought the game can't have negative feelings about it though.
Am I right to assume that we're on the same page regarding most things aside from believing that he mislead people into thinking there's multiplayer in NMS?

I'm not much fun either

when did playing tv games become a legitimate hobby and not something to do instead of spunking cash away down the pub?

Pretty much. I've not seen much evidence for direct misleading, more like not being 100% clear when a mic is shoved in your face and / or being broadcast live in front of a million people. Which I think is understandable.

That's one diablo>local plan

Could it also be possible at the time of that quote they still intended there to be multiplayer. Maybe it got pulled after the interview?
-
• #15572
This is exactly what I think. Based on Sean's interviews where he said that you could meet other players in the game, and in fact it's theonly way to know what you look like, but that it's extremely unlikely to happen, my guess is that this was something they figured they'd have time to add in an update. They've already said loads of updates are on the way (check patch 1.03) so seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Not a coder, but turning a single player game into a MMO doesn't sound trivial to me.

Bullshit - you just tick the "connect to wifi" box in the CMS.

Someone on reddit compiled a very long list of features which were discussed in NMS previews (or appeared in trailers) that are completely absent from the final game and it's pretty damning. Sean Murphy was entirely responsible for making the claims he did, and it's clear that many things were either never developed or couldn't be made to work properly so were dropped.
It doesn't seem unreasonable to blame Murphy for the hype when he was largely responsible for generating it. While he might not have been outright lying, I find it very difficult to believe - given the state of the finished product - that he wasn't aware he'd struggle to deliver what he was selling.
I've played enough over the last week to realise that it's seriously flawed in almost every respect. I've been persisting in the vain hope that something interesting might happen but it seems increasingly apparent that whatever that might be probably isn't worth the effort.
It's just a computer game - why are people so upset about it?
