This thread flatters me. I did have the assistance of an 11-36 cassette though I'm considering christening the single speed Cielo with another go in a few weeks.
Plenty of the there-and-back riders have done it single speed. Gear for the climbs and it limits you from going too hard on the flatter bit towards Winchester. Be prepared to walk a few of the steeper climbs near the end too, it won't be much slower anyway.
