Holdsworth Mistral (fixed gear to 1x3)

  • Objectives:

    1. Learn how to build a bike from parts.
    2. Steel lugged frame with black components (I like the looks).
    3. Don't go over my limited budget.
    4. Fixed gear, drop bars.
    5. ...
    6. Profit.

    Frame:
1981 Holdsworth Mistral in red, thanks @mrgumby. @anidel may be heartbroken that this isn't a full restoration project, sorry bud.

    Wheels:
V-Sprint Track Wheels - Miche Hubs, courtesy of @varno. Ordered on Saturday, arrived on Tuesday morning, great service.

    Parts:
I've got some other parts, still looking for:

    • stem
    • bars
    • levers
    • seat post

    Pics to follow.

  • oh no !

    /o\ (/me grabs hair)

    :)

  • Cheers mate, cheers...sad day for me, very sad...

  • Btw, I do have stem, bars and seat post I have no use for now.
Will PM with pictures later this morning or tonight.

    I think I've got a 26.8 and 27.2mm seatpost and I reckon you'd need the latter.

Drop bars are black, but very recent, so probably won't really work, but will send pictures and size asap during the morning.

The stem is 100m and in geat conditions.

  • Profit.

    Nope.

Boyyyeeeeee, I do this bike then I be stylin so hard I get mad notes.

  • That sounds wicked @anidel, thanks a bunch. Recent is good, I like recent.

  • Uploaded the pictures here as we speak:

You'll see the modern, but light, handlebars (not sure they fit the stem I have), the stem and the seatposts.

When you see the carbon forks you can stop, those are other things I have or had for sale.

  • No pics yet, I haven't got round to it.

Wheels, cranks, pedals and chain are on, and stem and bars thanks to @user48276.

Test ride 1 failed due to chain leaping from the cogs. Turns out I'd installed the Izumi chain the wrong way round and the master link was hitting the chainring and flinging the chain off. Easily fixed.

Test ride 2 failed as I hadn't tightened the rear wheel enough onto the dropouts so I torqued it sideways.

    Test ride 3: great success.

    Still to do:

    1. Bar plugs
    2. Bar tape
    3. Brake cables
    4. Brake levers
    5. Front brake (current one has too short arms by about 5mm, v.
      annoying)
    6. Seat post and seat post bolt
    7. Take decals off wheels
  • amazing. best test ride stories so far. +1

    Why rear brake?

  • That must be the worst Kickstarter idea I've ever seen.

    10/10

  • I meant front brake, not sure why I wrote rear. I swear I can tell the front of a bike from the rear, but I do have trouble with the old arse / elbow dichotomy.

  • .

  • The quick link / clip-type thing was initially facing outwards from the frame, there wasn't enough clearance for it to fit between the chainring and the metal chain guard.

I had to flip it over so that the chain link clip was facing inwards, otherwise it would hit the chain guard.

  • .

  • dude?
what parts do you still need?
i have a few sets of bars you can have your choice of.
    gratis if you come collect.

  • Thanks, just looking for a seat post and seat post bolt now really, I need to check the sizes. I've been on holiday and not managed to get much done.

  • Well that was a fun 2 years!

    Things I've learnt:

    • Always carry tools
    • You can fall off your bike while stationary, if you use foot straps
    • Thick tyres are the new thin tyres

Next Spring I want to go bikepacking. I'm cheap, so I want to use this bike, with some adjustments. I'm thinking 1x7 gears, new wheels?

That's for another day. For now, does anyone know why this has happened:

The teeth at 10/11 o'clock in this photo are worn to half the size of the others. I haven't even ridden that far. Is this just a consequence of buying budget components, or is it something else?

  • The chain guard replaces the outer chainring on what is obviously a converted double chainset thus the remaining (steel) chainring is ramped to facilitate shifting, whilst this does not affect performance I do wonder if it may not wear more quickly.

^ found this from a review on SJS Cycles. D'oh.

Turns out it might not be wear after all. I might just get a single-speed cog anyway, time to look at gear ratios...

  • I dunno, looks like wear to me. Is that rust on the teeth? Is this the only place on the chainring where the teeth have a different shape?

  • No, no rust. There's similarly shorter teeth in other sections on the chainring.
