To descend isnt just about gravity. It can also be used to describe a sudden attack/invasion/incursion. It can also be used to describe a deterioration in something.
For example:
Every Tuesday hoardes of grubby cyclists descend on the Flask at the top of Highgate West Hill. After several beers the conversation descends into garbage. Then they descend the hill to ride home.
