Dave Zabriskie went vegan for the last couple of years of his career I think.
(although I don''t know if EPO is vegan? /sarc)Edit, also @ BareNecessities lol

I just ordered some more. They are proper tasty and contain voodoo.

vegan voodoo?

Why are you being so judgmental about it? Every one has to start somewhere. I don't actually drink anymore, not that my substance abuse issues are any of your business
-

You have now edited your post but to address your question, I have no problems with vegans, but I do have a problem with bullshit like cancer juice. This kind of militant evangelism is the same kind of nonsense that religious zealots use.
Your holier than thou attitude and misguided faith that just blitzing fruit and drinking it has no potential side effects despite people clearly raising the possible harms shows your head is in the sand.
Well done on giving up drinking, am sure that will have greater benefits than giving up milk.

Well i was kinda asking the same question twice. I actually got that phrase from my grandad, so go easy on the name calling, he has been Vegan for 50+ years, muslim in his teens now Seventh day Adventist and also a doctor for over 30 years, he saw me drinking a protein shake once and said "you need to cut that cancer juice out", i had the same reaction at the time, but now, i wouldn't call it a bullshit statement at all, i agree my approach was pushy and inappropriate, i did apologize
If your ignoramus ass must know, I've had to live on blended food most of my life because i have a cleft lip/palate and hypermobility (hence the username) if you have a better option for me to not choke or not starve then i'm willing to hear it. I don't even blitz it, i pulse blend it a few seconds at a time, much better for you
I've cured my asthma since i have given up dairy, makes a bigger difference on the bike than dealing with the odd hang over

You clearly have some unique circumstances that account for what you are saying, I think what people are taking issue with is how you are taking those circumstances, and the attitudes and experiences you have from that specific perspective, and have tried to apply them to everyone else as a best practice regardless of their aims, goals or circumstance.

I have not gone name calling and had no idea "cancer juice" came from your grandfather. However given he believes the world was literally created in 7 days I would question his scientific reasoning.
You are conflating my calling bullshit on "cancer juice" with having a problem with vegans which is not true.
I am sorry about your condition but it still does not mean that blending and consuming multiple fruit at once will be good for your sugar/insulin levels.
-
• #985
Heh, this is definitely a case where early disclosure of your condition would have gone a long way towards understanding your viewpoint better, @Aches !
What dancing james says does stand - if you're looking to improve your nutrition, it's a great idea to look at nutrition facts, and look at ways to improve the amounts of proteins and amino acids you get from your post-ride smoothies... because there's not enough in fruit to help you much. -
• #986
spinach, rice, pasta, beans, potatoes, lentils, porridge, quinoa and hemp are just a few examples of what i eat every day, so i consume more than enough protein and amino acids, not an issue, but you also need the fructose, vitamins and minerals for recovery, i think some maybe neglecting those facts a bit
-
• #987
You appear to be utterly unable to understand anything people say to you. No one has said you don't need sugars post exercise, but we have questioned the quantity of sugars you are consuming.

Should read something about how much pesticides are used to grow vegetables
-
• #989
Yeah i have looked into that a bit to, try not to panic and go organic ;) although most GMO's are filtered into fast food, dairy, animal feed etc
-
• #990
Please don't tell me you're anti-GM too.. smh

Holy fuck, I am starving here guys SOS please send supplies, I fear the only thing that will be found will be my cold corpse clutching my leather journal of my journey as I have bonked on a minor hill then fallen over due to malnutrition and will never be able to get up..
I have been cycling in Asia for a bit now and I was in Thailand previous (Chiang Mai) where the riding is great and food is world class. Now I am in the Philippines the food is probably the worst I have ever had, there is fuck all selection and what there is here is just such poor quality. I had read that the food here was bad but Jesus it really is terrible.
My cycling form and motivation have taken a massive downer due to it also, I tend to avoid meat and only rarely eat Chicken if I must and it seems that the diet here is simply dry rice with fatty pork, or fatty pork and dry rice or "Meat" and dry rice or dry rice and "fat sauce".. There is zero other choice and even the Veg not (Vag) is terrible quality. My theory on this is that the big chain stores selling shit such as MCd's, Jollibee (native fast food outlet) etc etc have simply cornered the market and the expanded middle class simply eat this shit all the time and never need good produce. That would link in with the expanded waist lines of everyone from about 9-40 years of age.
No idea why I posted this maybe I just needed a rant as I am fairly shitty when I am starving, If I never make it back to the UK I will never moan about food here ever again..
I will leave you now as I am zoning out due to a complete lack of fucking calories..
Regards

Jesus man, I'm not anti veg (was meat-free for 15 years) but fuck that for now and eat whatever you can to make it out of there. If you can't find fresh anything (they don't have markets anymore?) just try to eat as many colours of food as possible while avoiding the more poisonous hues.

What has basically happened here is that prepacked American style mini marts have taken over and as such the local population now craves US imported crap, it is basically the worst of American food from these places or go native and eat the worst of Asia food. I have honestly never been anywhere that has such a poor standard of food.
People here eat fucking doughnuts for lunch for Christ sake,. Truth be told about 5 years ago I broke what I would call a junk food addiction and since then my cycling has increased 10 fold and my health and well being has increased remarkably, there is no way I am going back to eating fatty Pork or poor cuts of Beef.
Since my post earlier I found a number of blogs and articles stating what I have experienced, well worth a read if you are thinking of coming here..
I am here until November 1st GOD HELP ME!!!

Weight loss - my standard midweek ride is 2.5hrs Z3, with a bowl of museli + fruit and coffee before I start. I was eating about 40g of carbs or so during this, but I've stopped that and just take it ever so slightly easier to ensure I actually get to the office.
Some of my more obsessive (and skinnier) hillclimb friends are doing 20-30 mile fasted rides, but I've tried it and I can't do 50 without eating before. I did have ~10g of protein over the second half this morning to try and kickstart recovery.
Standard recovery drink afterwards, and then trying to get to lunch without eating.
Thoughts?

Its really hard to give you the ultimate bottom line here, but i can say that fasted rides need to be built into your regime - with a progression in distances until you complete the distance desired.
You seem to have done the right thing in your first paragraph, and scaling back the effort to keep your body burning the right fuel (which we would hope, is fat) is ideal.I am not sure the protein intake is necessary at that point in your ride, and carbs may be the better option - if only to raise blood sugar levels for a day of working ahead. Fasted training before a long day at work is a balance... one that i have messed up many times.
If you are riding with numbers (speed, power or heart rate) and you notice a considerable drop during the latter part of your rides - only you can answer the following:- Can you push through safely with no food/a little carbohydrate FLUID (easily assimilated)
- Are you pushing too hard.
As soon as you arrive, hydrate with water. Then get some food in.
Just my thoughts. - Can you push through safely with no food/a little carbohydrate FLUID (easily assimilated)

@umop3pisdn
Whenever i do a fasted ride it's super easy indoors, and it leaves me ravenous through the rest of the day and it makes me question the point. But taht's me.You probably need to take the intensity down a bit - if you push too hard you'll burn your wuvvly muscles and not fat
-
• #997
Thanks both.
Weirdly today I started off feeling shit (phlegmy and slow) but built throughout the ride, was knocking our some good sprints along Embankment (chopper, I know).
I don't think I'm pushing too hard, I know the feel of my body very well and the distance is sustainable at the pace I've been doing. I normally eat breakfast 2.5 hours after waking up with two short rides (10-15 min) and a train journey in between - this might help?
Caved and ate a bowl of fruit at 11 - should be ok until 1 now. Fizzy water and coffee.
Plan for Thursday is to do Swains reps fasted, this was fine last year. I do have a fair bit of fat to burn, not quite down to the muscles yet!

Fair dos. I think I struggle as I'm built like a beanpole
-
• #999
I'm a beanpole, just wrapped in some lard
-
• #1000
I'm sure you are aware - a fasted Swains would require a certain tempo to ensure you aren't just emptying muscle glycogen, which without adequate recovery nutrition afterwards would negate the whole point of fasted training.
Its such a fine line.... Try it on thursday and see how it goes!
"beetroot concentrate flapjacks"
Maybe...
