  • Looking forward to seeing a good thorough review of NMS (the PC version at least, which seems a little buggy). Until then, this lends evidence to my fears:

    http://www.pcgamer.com/what-no-mans-sky-could-learn-about-exploration-from-kerbal-space-program/

  • NMS just looks a bit dull no? I'm sure it's very pretty, but I really struggle with games that aren't narrative driven - all the mining/building stuff just seems like a console-based version of building kit models.. Without anything to really show for it at the end.

  • Gameplay is everything, no? A lot of these games look so fucking tedious, are people's lives so boring that they have to resort to playing shit games to fill the vacuum of their meaningless existence? #gotacold #bitgrumpy

  • This is pretty much how I feel about it. Just get some lego, dorks.

  • I think that's actually key to understanding the response that this game is getting.

The traditional gamer community hates it because it's not narrative driven - there's not that sense of a story to play through and 'complete'. It's why they're so pissed off about this multiplayer thing.

But people like me, who're gamers but not hardcore Gamers, we're maybe more interested in them as a cultural experience rather than a box ticking exercise, we're totally totally gassed for this game BECAUSE there isn't a story. I'd rather no narrative than a bad narrative, and stories in games - to me - are 95% cringe inducing. Rescue the princess from a dark lord blah blah blah bad voice acting blah blah occasional Hollywood star blah blah. Achieve this objective. Get rewarded with a cutscene. Blah blah.

No, give me a universe and space to explore it. If that means it looks pointless to a lot of people, so be it. I don't want the gaming community neckbearding up my beautiful universe anyway.

  • My reaction was a bit more:

  • I get what you're saying but why explore a virtual world with crappy game dynamics when there is...y'know... the world out there? To me, even Pokémon Go makes more sense...

  • I still don't quite understand what NMS is. You fly around landing on different planets, having a quick look around, and move on?

  • Emergent narrative has always been something that happens to games journalists, not me. Give me a proper RPG any day

  • It's a survival, basically you try to survived as long as you can.

  • Ah - DayZ with rockets but no zombies.

Looking forward to the PC reviews.

  • Problem I'm finding is that there really isn't a penalty for dying. You don't lose much if you do

  • I welcome that because I find it hard to get into the survival genes, if NMS give me less of a penalty for dying, then I'm more inclined to play it.

  • As I was walking down Dalston High Street yesterday I realised the exact answer to your question, which is this:

No Mans Sky has better graphics than reality.

  • Does it have a Matalan though?

My criteria of modern game, linear gameplay, single player is bloody difficult nowadays

  • Picked up Xcom 2 for twenty notes on steam.

  • Where dem NMS PC reviews at??

  • I'm still tempted to buy NMS. I figure if I get 6 hours, that's $10 an hour, which is about pub rates

  • Review I saw today said it's no fun until 20 hours in. Worlds and things get a bit samey. Looks a bit like an indie title that's been given the AAA sales pitch to me (which, I guess, is exactly what it is).

  • Waiting for a price drop before I go NMSing

  • hmm ok I'll hold off at least till sept. Will finish FO4 instead.

  • While you wait to pull the trigger on NMS, try the Golden Eye 007 Source remake, pretty damn awesome.

  • Spent the past few days umming and ahhing about No Man's Sky, bought Rodina instead.

  • Anyone installed Enderal yet ? Skyrim addon / usermade DLC / etc...
