  • I tried everything, definitely not the cable (3 different one), factory reset, removed SD card, clean the port with alcohol, etc.

  • My Elemnt did what I wanted on today's club run, it also showed me a variety of coloured lights, none of which I had a clue what they meant

  • mine beeped a lot; didnt know what that meant either. I did figure out that the vertical leds were telling me if i was going faster or slower... i think the baseline was my first lap average.

various other flashy coloured lights, i was similarly confused...

    nice idea, though!

  • Forerunner 235 works well for me. Primarily a brilliant running watch but also tracks cycling as well.

  • Some issues with my Garmin yesterday (and something I learned). If you turn pause/turn off the unit at lunch time it writes a .fit file, so when the unit crashed at 104 miles done (and 2 miles to finish), I at least only lost 40 miles.

There isn't a second .fit file for the other half of the ride. Any ways to look for the lost data?

    (edit: Garmin 810 FYI)

  • Just let it go bro. You still did the ride.

  • Ha, of course. Was surprised to see the first half was saved

  • Sadly, in my experience with exactly that type of crash, the lost data has been missing completely beyond a few dodgy looking timestamps (always right back to the time it was last turned off). The various online repair tools don't seem to work either - although I gather the guys here.. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?36743-Fit-File-Corrupt-can-you-repair-it .. sometimes have some success in finding bits and pieces that can be used...

  • Thanks.
Not really fussed enough to go through any more effort now.

  • Has anyone else found that, recently, Strava has stopped syncing new activities from Garmin Connect.

Accounts are still nominally connected on both platforms. Been over a day the ride's been in GC. No sign of it in Strava.

Started happening after Strava went a bit funny the weekend of Ride London.

  • Hmm, I haven't noticed it happening recently but it has happened to me before (and Ride London definitely killed Strava last year too). In my experience, if it doesn't sync within 10mins then it never will and has to be uploaded manually, as it doesn't seem to work well with 'historical' activities. It usually works ok for the next ride once that's done though..

  • Did you managed to pause it, turn it off then unpause like the Garmin?

Tried to do that this morning by pausing and turning off, which result in not saving my ride.

    Edit; turn out it's still in beta;

I think its fair to reveal that some stuff associated with stop, power down, restart, continue, recover, etc are currently in beta. It would not be fair of me to reveal more until they are tested further I think. But Wahoo are definitely on it :-)

  • That sounds like a bit if a drawback... I've not used the Elemnt for commuting yet so not needed to do that.

  • It was, best part about the Elemnt is that it automatically upload my ride second after entering my house.

Hopefully it won't be long before they introduced the power down feature.

  • My Garmin discarded a file as I have fat thumbs. Any way to recover, was a good one.

  • I just got an update on my 1000 that means i can start using Connect IQ Apps. I know sod all about them and what's available.

Are any of the apps worth getting, and does running them smash the battery, and do they cause crashing etc at all? If they make the unit more unstable i'm steering well clear.

Give me all the knowledge. Thanks!

  • Depends on which garmin , the etrex series automatically save each days activity irregardless of user intervention.
Slight rephrase the etrex automatically archive either daily, weekly or when the track log is full. Depends on device setup. Default is daily.

  • What is the forum reccomended usb charging device for charging garmins on the go when out for longer than ~12hrs?
    The smaller the better.

  • My 5000mAh pack from Portapow kept my Garmin 705 going for the 24h TT. The Garmin was fully charged at the start (and at the end) and the Portapow still had power left in it.

I wasn't using navigation, displaying the map or using much backlight (not much point as it was a marshalled TT with very few turns and I was just using the Garmin as a data logger).

Separately I've used the same power pack and GPS with navigation, displaying a map with backlight on a 600km Audax that had me on the bike for ~35h.

  • I use exposure lights and have their boost cable which can then have the light act as a battery pack too.

  • For info the normal edge battery is about 1000 mAh.
The lipstick type by anker (recommended) are about 3000 mAh.

  • So much this

My Garmin used to be great at navigating, but it appears the routing algorithm changed at some point, and sometimes 15 mile journeys would become 60 miles if I followed the Garmin.

  • Thanks for the info. Lipstick thingy looks good. Don't think I will use it when actually moving, just be good to have something I can plug in when stopped for 20 odd minutes here and there.

  • 1000

    I think it's gone :(
