  • Have you installed and adjusted gears before? It can be a bit tricky, especially if it's your first time.

Looks like your derailleur is mounted too high. Should be more like this:

The distance between the teeth of the chainring and the lower part of the outside of the derailleur should be around 1-2mm.

About the chain not shifting onto the large chainring: without the shifter cable properly attached to the derailleur and the tension set, the derailleur will be in its resting position (thus the space between the derailleur and the chain).

Let's say the derailleur is properly adjusted. Once you shift upwards, you pull the cable and the tension will move the derailleur outboard, pushing the chain and therefor shifting it onto the large chainring. You can move the derailleur by hand without the cable attached to the derailleur to see this. The spring is quite strong so you have to use some force (heh).

I hope I'm understanding you correctly. Look up some tutorials on how to set up derailleurs on YouTube. There are some really handy ones, for example from GCN.

  • I've not, I'm going by the manuals and YouTube.

Understood about the height, I've been moving it around to see if I can get it further out, that's now lower.

Seems to be getting there with a bit of extra cable tension but only seems to shift up when I really hold the shifter in.

I'll look at it further tomorrow.

    Thanks for the tips.
