  • It's a tandem.

I side with @hoops on this, the fact it's a tandem on top of a custom is always going to take a while, and most especially since this is his first foray in building a tandem.>

Look, frame builder knows best. They're the professionals after all. Aren't we all.
You tell me that it will take 4 months, I believe you. Tell me you'll be finishing it this month, I believe you. At some point when none of the stuff that you're told pans out, and in the midst of this going on, you have another bike built and when received, it isn't up to scratch, you loose faith in what's going on.
Tell me it's gong to take 18 months from the outset, then that's OK.

  • That other bike seems to either be the best thing you've ever seen, or the biggest pile of shit you've ever come accross depending on what mood you're in. I guess you're in a bad mood at the moment.

Either way, it's not really got anything to do with this build.

  • I'm with 7VEN. If the builder says it will take 3 months, you are going to listen to them. It shouldn't be up to the consumer to know better than the service provider. I'd be pissed if 3 months turned in to 18.

  • Seems like (lack of) communication is the frustration here, not a complaint about the amount of time and effort put into it, or how awesome it will be when it's done. And think 7VEN is being fairly accepting of the 'it'll be done when it's done' timescale now.
It's fine for you and others with a lot more experience of frame building to come and say "you should be happy with 2 years" but I think it's fair enough to be frustrated at not being able to rely on the word of the maker. Contigency is one thing - sometimes things just take a bit longer. But this isn't just a bit. I work in design+make too (not bikes) and it's obvious client satisfaction relies hugely on expectation - whether of timescale or finished product - as much as anything else.
Sorry, I realise you don't want to get into a debate (nor do I, way over my head) but it feels like you're telling 7VEN that he shouldn't be annoyed (I think you should be happy if) which is kind of different to "in my experience I would expect this to take at least 18 months".

  • @edscoble @Hovis no taking sides now!

  • Seems like (lack of) communication is the frustration here

We've all missed delivery dates, and in most cases it's not a big deal if we tell the customer before the specified delivery date that things have slipped. It's always a much bigger deal if we wait for the customer to call us to complain about it after the deadline has already passed.

  • Oh yes!
    Nearly there.

  • Wow. That looks so good, can't wait to see it finished and adventuring!

  • Dan and Matt have been pulling some long hours on this. Dan's etch primed, primed, sealed and coloured and should be finished today. Apparently, the compressor blew up so a screw fix run was in order.

  • So after all that discussion you decided to go brakeless?

  • YYEESSSSS!! (I'm excited to see this finished)

  • No face mask? Brave fellow. Maybe its an activated charcoal beard.

  • Or water based paints?

  • Brks r deth

  • It's huge and purple/gold/blue/red! Needs a week to harden up (too big for Dan's oven) and the headbadge and dropouts polishing off and the polishing of the paint for the final time but it's getting there.

  • If you had it built with SS couplers you could have had a new year end built as your kid gets bigger.

  • True, there's another on the way as well so could of made some modular triple / quad tandem as the family grows.
May have fitted in Dan's oven with couplers too.

  • Could be, although the colour coats don't look like it. Even if it was, I still wouldn't want to breath it myself. Still, each to their own.

  • That looks beautiful!

  • Aye, wouldn't do it without a mask meself, used to work in the printing industry, always wore a mask, no matter what I was working with.
@7VEN, coming along nicely, well worth the wait.

  • Colour is mazing - love it.

  • This drying week gives you ample time to take closer pictures.
Cables go inside the ovalised bottom tube just behind the front BB,
and exit just in front of the stocker's BB ?

I'm pretty sure that's what we agreed. I'm heading up to Blue door to get a few things done on my planet x this weekend so if Matt's around, will confirm.
