Nice frame!

any decent looking 130bcd cranks to replace the aesthetically challenged ones that come with a Genesis day one???
-
• #109454
Alfine chainset that come with it's own external BB (110BCD).

Alfine
A sound suggestion, except that if he doesn't like the aesthetics of the stock crank he's not all that likely to fall in love with the FC-S501

looking to replace the alfine, it's fugly, and if my dream of being able to switch from hub gear to 1x10 configuration is going to happen, 13obcd crankset is the way to go. So anything decent looking which isn't bb30?

Narrow wide chainring on Alfine chainset? would look noticably better.
Failing that, just get some cheap crankset from Spa Cyclex (£25 I think) and plop in a narrow wide 110bcd chainring.

What do want it to look like? Alfine is fairly inoffensive, so it's hard to suggest anything without some guidance about your taste

I'm just looking for alternatives, never really had to look for alternatives to track cranksets before, more interested in it being robust, not as plastic looking as the alfine, not too many logo's, preferably silver, but I can live with black..
Less is more, not over designed, not so expensive that it'll hurt me to scratch it, and not so cheap that it does what it says on the tin and no more...

I suggest going for a 110BCD chainset and run Narrow/Wide chainring for flexibility (especially running as a 1x10).
Rest is up to you.

Really can't see past the FC-S501 to tick those boxes.

Jumped on these for £45 yesterday. The trispoke turned out also to be a rear, but after some quick googling it seems like I might be able to convert it to a front with this: http://www.hedwheels.com/proddetail.asp?prod=H3FrontTrackAxle
Anyone have experience with doing that? It's now 120mm threaded for freewheel.

Da7800? Trickle down means the alfine is probs the same though

Absolute steal.
You can bodge the axle using the cones from a cup & cone front axle. Think there's a particular Shimano one that's @mdcc_tester approved and @umop3pisdn tested, which will sit snugly inside a 6001 bearing (12mm ID), and is much cheaper than buying the kit.
I bought the kit because I wanted those machined alu bearing seats, but didn't use anything else, so looking back, it was a bit of a waste of money. -

If it's freewheel you can use front track axle from miche hub.
-
• #109467
I think that was @Scilly.Suffolk rather than me.

Whoops, thought you used that mod a few years back.
In that case, @larsenroad, SPNK/Walker Brothers might also be able to supply bearing seats (although better suited to later HED hub aesthetics):

Here's a closeup. An @mdcc_tester approved solution would be good. Walker Brothers seems like an expensive route.

If it's not dished then could you just swap out the axle for a front one?
"If you can get the freewheel version, that is the same wheel as the front except for the axle. If you are a little bit handy, and don't mind voiding a long expired warranty, you can convert the wheel to a front with a hacksaw, and a flat file and power drill to reduce the diameter of the axle where it clamps into the fork dropouts (just file the threads off outside of the locknuts). The spacing works out perfectly just by removing the spacers in the axle. Make sure you get the width right, it would be best to use another front wheel to make sure that you get the right width.
That is what I did with mine. Got the wheel for free, and mucked around in my workship for a few hours."

It looks like a 10mm axle with loose bearing seats.
If so:
buy this:
Shimano XT Front M10 Hollow Hub Axles - TWO FOR ONE! bottom of page
install with 10mm less spacers on each side (hard part)
done! :) -

WTF i just ordered one of these yesterday and it processed through?
-
• #109473
any details on this?
-
• #109474
The HB-M525 axle has M10×1 threads to accept rear wheel hardware, and steps down to 9mm at the dropouts. Much easier to spend £10 than to mess about with saws and files. You'll may need some chainring bolt spacers to get the OLN to 100mm and with the wheel in the middle.

Also if anyone cares they do have the qr front axels in stock just not the track
haha rumbled!
