That looks ace

Bit of an understatement considering the two sizable anti lug rants I've heard from you of late!

You're right about the NFE. It's great for 'roads' like this.
But if you ride mostly on road and you're not carrying much stuff, then something more spritely would be best.
The NFE has been great for the riding I do and It's really good for a night or two camping. -

That exactly what I love about my NFE, it's a great touring bike that doesn't feel like a touring bike.

Sorry if repost, but haven't seen this come up before:

At local bike shop, Mechanic Jake is prepping for the "Race to the Rock", Adelaide to Uluru.
He'll have to carry all those bottles plus two hydration bladders, as there's really not many shops on the way.

Interesting stuff. I have something similar in my mind for the bigxtop rando that I'm trying to order. Found this http://theradavist.com/2016/06/my-home-hacked-thomson-and-ortlieb-decaleur-morgan-taylor/#1
and this http://oceanaircycles.com/2014/09/10/pannier-hardware-decaleur-hack/

That should be easy enough if you can get the hardware for it.
My setup is a bit clumsy compared to the links you've shared. I should get a bigxtop rando bag at some point as well.

Thats a mad race! This is why I like my surly fork and wald combo, you can still carry 2 extra water bottles for a bivi and have a load up top

Sjs or bike-components.de have all the ortlieb bits needed, I think. There's a whole flickr thing (by Alex Whetmore I think) with racks designed around ortlieb hardware. With your brazing skills surely no problem to make something custom?

Mad is 0ne word to describe it. I would probably die trying something like that. Inland Australia is a harsh and unforgiving place. Get stranded and your next chance to get water is a looooong way away.

might be a stoopid question, but if you were going to run a 29er frame with drops, how would you approach sizing? Just go as close to your road bike effective top tube length as you can?
Building a more rugged disc tourer/rando/trail bike and thinking of departing from the road/cx options to more offroad-orientated but without flat bars.
Was looking at an Ogre but the weenie in me started crying and telling me to just get a caadx and suck it, then the buyer in me told me to just go custom, then the calvinist scot in me said 'just go planet x london road and stop being such a materialistic princess.'
Now I have no idea.

• #12714
I'd be looking to replicate stack/reach of a similarly (un)aggressive road frame that fits.
-
• #12715
Ah, thank you. Will have a gander and see how that translates
-
• #12716
just go planet x london road and stop being such a materialistic princess.
Just did this. The frame's hanging in the workshop looking at me, whispering "you cheap bastard, you'll never be on radavist. I'm so plain and simple you'll be whipped to within an inch of your life for even touching me"
Wait this is the functional thread.
Do it.

or/plus look at front-center distance (aiming for the same as road bike + the tyre width difference). So even if the headangle isnt the same the weight on the front should be close.
-
• #12718
Speaking of functional, I've literally not so much as tweaked a cable since I bought my London Road straight out of the box, 1,900 miles ago. It works.

"calvinist scot in me said 'just go planet x london road and stop being such a materialistic princess.'"
"you cheap bastard, you'll never be on radavist."Absolute gold

Why not get an Inbred + ogre or troll forks?
-
• #12721
there's not many geo charts that show this I'm finding... does that mean having to manually input into bikecad or similar?
-
• #12722
Mostly because the triangle is so small there'd be no room for a frame bag+bottles.
Ogre frame looks like you'd at least get one bottle in, but maybe not.
-
• #12723
is that with the Sram groupset?
Are your discs hydro or cable?
-
• #12724
Did you go frame only? I'm thinking of full bike to at least transplant the groupset onto something... more functional at a later date.
Anyone got any opinions on the Salsa Marrakesh btw?
-
• #12725
I guess so, sometimes you can ~estimate it from wheelbase minus chainstay length.
It is mostly for if you want to match up 2 frames with different headangles.
Bi lam serve no purpose whatsoever in this functional thread.
Loved it.
