Took the Singular 29er out for its first real ride yesterday. Very pleased, extremely fun to ride, and much more agile than i had expected.
Gearing was on point, tire combo felt great, love the feel of the cockpit.
Two things that need improving.
1) Dropped the chain 3 or 4 times, usually descending rough stuff on the low end of the cassette (ie, slack chain). Need a Narrow wide. 5 arm 94bcd's seem to only be made by wolftooth, and cost a lot..
2) Fork dropout orientation. I talked to Sam at Singular Cycles about it and he said that my swift is one of the first generations, and therefore has the dropouts facing downwards. The problem with this is when i brake hard on the front wheel (nose pivot/ stoppie), the axle on the disc side shifts a little bit, making the disk rub pretty bad, even with the QR clamped as hard as possible. I tried switching to a different quickrelease, which helped a bit, but i can still get it to budge. They have since been changed to forward facing dropouts (and increase tire clearance), so i may invest in a new one.
This explains it quite well, showing forward facing dropouts.
This is what my current fork has

Introducing my most loved bike of the stable.. Titanium cyclocross bike from 89.
Its slowly becoming more functional, with the latest update being the SJS rack and wald combination. Ergo grips on the way, hopefully a dtswiss ratchet upgrade from the current 18t, and a good sized frambag are on the list.
Can anyone recommend a good framebag that fits well with a tall headtube? Full length of the tt, but only as deep as the headtube or a little deeper.

might be a bit late, but careful with mini vs. On earlier cross bikes the canti studs are closer together so mini vs and modern cantis won't fit. old canti studs are about 68mm apart, new ones nearer 82mm. If the rear bosses are about 62mm then you can run shimano cx-50 or cx-70 cantis, which are the best ones that will fit.
also you could try a allen key skewer on the singular?

Thanks for the heads up. Luckily the titanium frame has 82mm between the studs, so no problems there. However the Van Tuyl is 62mm at the fork, and 68 in the rear. I have however successfully run V's on my gfs touring bike, which was 62 at the fork. All the spacers on the outside, and a bit of filing to the pad (non rim side) made it work perfect. Not ideal, but what the hell.
Funny you mention the allen skewer. I considered it, but i didnt actually think they could hold more than a fully tensioned quick release. I guess ill give it a go

You risk stripping the threads if you over tighten an Allen skewer.
Have you tried a shimano closed cam qr?
That fancy dt one is just as bad as novatec, zipp, planetx etc etc.. lightweight yes, but won't hold a thing. -
• #60
+1 shimano cam qr
-
• #61
Ah yes, just read up on sheldon about the difference between enclosed and exposed cam. Ill give a Shimano closed cam a try, and maybe an allen skewer if it still doesnt hold.
Anyways, regarding narrow wide, it looks like ill have to go with Wolf Tooth's for 74 Euros from singlespeed.nl. There doesnt seem to be any alternatives for 5arm 94bcd.
Anyone know a place to get a cheap custom NW's done? Or is it not at all worth it.
-
• #62
A cam type QR will be stronger than any hex key skewer type.
Currently the only way to roll around on cheap NWs is by goin 104bcd. Luckily there is plenty of cheap crankset options out there.

First test ride was good. As @fredtc mentioned, i fumbled around quite a bit with the mini v and stud spacing. Got it to work in the end, but it required a bit of bending. Good thing the brakes are just randoms found on an abandoned citybike.
Still needs bar tape of course, a few spacers for the headset, an inline post, and a black stem. I have this rad little 80mm 1" ahead stem that'll go on with an adapter.
Kind of unsatisfied with how messy it looks at the moment. Hopefully it will come together nicely with the final touches.

Nice, I've a soft spot for van tuyls too.

The mr pink from all city is so sick. Such a fan of the tire clearance capabilities.
This build is a huge source of inspiration for my Ti road build. Wish mine could clear 32's..

Aight, i need help. My principia track (page 2) takes an external cup 1-1/4" headset.
Should i get this?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NECO-1-1-4-Head-Tube-Reduced-to-1-1-8-Fork-Tube-Bike-Headset-41-8-47mm-Bearings-/231357440326?var=&hash=item35ddfa6146:m:mYm4fmdLuTIQcTx-ZiRE2rA
looks like a full headset with external dia for my frame, and internal dia for my 1-1/8 fork. Looks kinda weird though, as if there is missing a bit of lip to be inserted into the headtube on the bottom cup.Or this?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ID-Headtube-Headset-Reducer-Shims-1-1-4-to-1-1-8-One-Pair-CNC-Alloy-/401160816158?hash=item5d670c461e:g:Sc8AAOSwc0FUp~qs
The description sounds like they just shim out the headtube to my 1-1/8" headset, but it looks like they add lot of stack. Especially compared to this one from bike24 which is unfortunately out of stock.. -

Or wait, is that neco headset for tapered forks?..

Maybe link this into the any questions answered thread, or the current projects thread
More people, who have the knowledge are likely to see it then -

I was really happy with finding the kcnc krankset for so cheap, so i splurged on the chainring and got the wolftooth.
X0 9speed mech can also only take 34t max cassette, so being able to run a 28t chainring on the smaller 94bcd was key in order to get enough spinny for climbing.
Well the chainring is killer. Been out the past two days enjoying the bike and trails. I actually had 1 dropped chain after a steep and fast descent on a very rough rooty section, but im thinking its because of it being a 9speed chain nd therefore wider. wolftooth actually reccomends using a 10speed chain with a 9speed setup for better hold. Could also be the fact that its a tiny chainring, making for less chain wrap. Just a guess
Heres a few phone pics. Golden hour in the forest is great!

Headset plunked in very nicely, despite the still slightly out of shape headtube. The hella drop was a bit worrisome but it actually feels quite good. My childishly short torso and apelike arms make it fit quite well ;)
Was in a bit of a pickle with the stem situation. Had a zipp 6 degree, an x2 10degree and this x4 0degree to work with, all 100mm. Decided to save the zipp sl for my titanium road, and the x4 let me slam it and still be able to reach the bars. Maybe the x2 with a bit of spacer could work..
Now im on the hunt for an Alpina fork that i can chop down to fit the frame, cuz i dont want to cut the steerer on this one. A sleek saddle and a 120mm stem and im good. Then the wheelset could use an upgrade.. but damn its fun to fly on as is!!!

Is this a set of 2x10 brifters with the shifter bit removed from the left? I thought that supplied the spring tension. Is it all in the caliper now?
Looks nice btw.
Cheers @dragonflyblu , looks better dirty ;)
So heres one thats been sitting for a while. I traded an old pair of mavic cosmic wheels for this frame for my other half. A sweet little 51x51 Dutch cross bike, in Columbus Genius tubes. Straight up cross bike - no mudguard eyelets, no holes in the bridges or crown, top of toptube cable stops, pretty neat.
Plans:
1x10 cross bike with kojaks for faster day rides on mostly road, some gravel. Sram force crankset, 42t nw, 11-32, x9 short rear mech, deda piega 26.0 compact bars, tektro mini V, and cheapo but very durable/ servicable shimano r501 wheelset.
The initial idea was risers, but since her Basso tourer/ commuter has got a similar cockpit, drops are beginning to seem more suitable.
