Classic bike - modern groupset

  • The levers have been set as I would position brake (not Ergo/STi) levers on a classic bend bar: tips level with the drops, so that they are usable when in the hooks.

However that sites the body of Ergo/STi too far down the bar, so all your weight is on the hoods (and the web twixt thumb and forefinger), rather than on the ramps.

Ergo/STi are designed for a flat transition from horizontal ramps; the classic bend dates from long before anyone rode on the hoods.

Either way, I'd want those bars rotating up: like that, my wrists would be bent back and I find it more comfortable to have the arm and wrist in a straight line.

I agree that Noodles are a good compromise though: I have SRAM S500 on DA AX, which works nicely.

  • That's precisely why I said it depend on your hands, mine is happy with resting on the ergo levers alone, ramp or not.

  • Anyone know about spacing? I've got an 8 speed DA 7400 cassette. Would a ten speed Chorus fit in that same space?
And what would the weight difference be? I can't quite tell what's making my bike so damn heavy.

  • Your wheels may be the main culprit.

As for spacing, you can fit a 130mm spacing (typical with 8/9/10/11 speed) on your frame, even if it's 126mm.

  • I'm in the process of modernising my gazelle ab for daily use... I have the full silver sram rival 10speed group for it but will wait for after l'Eroica Britannia to build it up... Thinking Dynamo front hub and hope mono rs rear laced to grey tb14 or archetype, or mavic ceramics... Pdw fenders, cambium, white hoods and tape...

  • That look like a nice combination, my opinion is to go for the grey TB14, which would look apt with the skinny tyres.

From the look of it, you can't go any bigger than 23? if so, the TB14/Archetype would be better suited due to allowing slightly more clearance (tyre sit lower), and more comfort (lower pressure).

  • I think you're right. I think it's the weeks. The rims in fact.

  • Here you go.

Lighter than average wheel for the money, you can select silver/silver to match (and Campagnolo freehubs as well).

Don't forget to put new brake pads on with new rims.

  • Built up my Colnago with modern groupset, all I'm changing is putting a longer stem/compacts on and getting another wheelset for touring.

  • Carbon parts

  • Yeah, I'm leaning toward the tb14 - I've got a pair of Archetypes (that would build a lighter/stiffer wheelset that can be 'shared' with my other bike) in the shed waiting but they are just slightly mismatched in colour, one is more brown-grey than the green-grey of the other... was aiming for something like this -

The frame has plenty clearance for 28mm tyres but I could only just get 25mm paves under the PDW on 23mm wide rims on another build so that will be the limiting factor...

Long term I'm still on the lookout for a 110mm pro chrome/ti quill stem and 27.2 ti seatpost to match the PDW, silver threaded CK hs...

Here is how it looked for last years L'eroica Brit - https://www.pinterest.com/pin/347058715008241278/

I'm tempted to use some carbon Force levers and black callipers to keep a similar vibe going

    Cheers,
    Matt

  • Built up my Gazelle AB with modern parts, very happy with it

  • ^ Lovely!

My Ron has also joined the Corsa G+ club this Summer.

  • Cheers - always liked your Ron Cooper, what width are those tyres? I wanted 25's but was limited to 23's, even so they roll well enough.

  • Ta! Tyres are 25c. They're noticeably wider than the Clement Strada LGG 25c that they replaced. I don't have measuring calipers so I don't know by how much, but I know that they require some gentle forcing through the brake blocks. Clearances are snug but not too tight.

  • I noticed my Corsa G+ 23's were wider than the Panaracer 23's they replaced too. Clearances look good, but frame condition looks even better. Do you have any photos before the respray?

  • Not exactly porn worthy, but looks decent and classy for a daily commuter.

  • This is actually the second respray. I'm afraid I wasn't as caring for the Ron as a teenager, so I've had two Cinelli stems seizing into rusty head tubes. Oops.

Original paint scheme (1987, mad blue/white '80s fadez) and build (tubs and lots of nice but mixed bits from my brother's Roberts):

A rare action shot, at the Junior Milk Race, Romford, 1988:

I didn't take many photos in its mid-life guise, in fact this one I took to enquire on this forum whether it would be worth selling, shortly before deciding to keep it and treat it to a revamp. (Phew!!)

Bumping into Ron (RIP) when I took it in to Colour Tech for the respray:

  • Great story and remember seeing this photo with Ron on the forum some time back. Liking the frame in blue and certainly the right decision on keeping it considering you've had it so long!

  • Slightly cross posting but some personal favourites

  • Seen this around hammersmith/Chiswick.. This you? Fake De rosa? @DoktorPepe
