  • Who / what are they for?

The old, fat and unfit me, I think.

  • me, I think.

Saying that, Nino Schurter was running a 10-50 SRAM Eagle cassette at the XC World Champs this year. Don't know how much of that was simply marketing and if he actually used that low gear option.

You wouldn't think he'd carry the extra weight for nothing.

  • 1 x emergency

They've spotted the market for "extender sprockets" from OneUp, Hope, Wolftooth etc, but they've missed the fact that those aftermarket products are often bling that stands out from the rest of the drivetrain, whereas these "standard" dinner plates look just like the 7sp "Megarange" blocks you get on budget bikes.

  • Surely no one can tell the difference once it's all covered in your local variety of grinding paste?

  • Exactly.

I'm using a sunrace 11-42 cassette, in black. No point buying shiny stuff, once it's covered in clay and cow shit, it's just a cassette.

  • Your just a cassette

  • Need some hive mind help.

The rear wheel on my 29er is locked up. How can I check to make sure it's the freewheel and not the disc brake? Internet is not helpful.

  • Take the wheel out and spin it in your hands, or just try to turn the freehub body.

If the brake is locked on, you probably won't be able to pull the lever.

  • Ok. Ta.If it is the freewheel - service the hub? Or bin?

Sometimes the former leads to the latter anyway based on the mechanics advice. Just trying to cut out the middleman if I can.

  • service the hub? Or bin?

Depends on what it is really. Anything fancy ( Hope, King, DT ), then strip-clean/replace small parts-rebuild. Shimano should mean replacing the whole freehub body, which is a simple swap, once you've found the correct model.

Needs to be a really low-budget hub to require binning the whole thing.

  • Course, it could also just be the bearings.

  • OK. Thanks. Will drop it off chez mechanic and see what they say.

  • You've got about 7 weeks to get it fixed :-)

  • I'm running XT shifter (coz ispec b) xtr mech and cassette - v. impressed

  • That 'low gear option' comes with a 38t front!
Question for me is does he actually use 38x10!

  • True, the larger chainring is a few extra grams too.

You wouldn't think he'd carry the extra weight for nothing.

I reckon he's probably got the strength to move that 109" gear. I hear he's quite good :-)

  • £100 for servicing Fox 32s. Fair?

  • Lowers only or the whole shebang?

  • I had presumed both, but I'll check. Much of a cost difference?

  • New tallboy is internally routed and £££

  • I've got a Rock Shox Recon 100mm 29 suspension fork with lockout I'll be selling on Ebay at some point. Very good condition, with spare set of seals.

    £60, if anyone is interested.

  • Ignoring trying to explain swingarm pivot points to him. He wants cables hidden alllll the way to their destination.
At this point, most 2016 stock is rapidly disappearing, so not looking like he's gonna get anything.

This run hurts my spine. She annihilates it.
