Ok. Ta.If it is the freewheel - service the hub? Or bin?
Sometimes the former leads to the latter anyway based on the mechanics advice. Just trying to cut out the middleman if I can.

Depends on what it is really. Anything fancy ( Hope, King, DT ), then strip-clean/replace small parts-rebuild. Shimano should mean replacing the whole freehub body, which is a simple swap, once you've found the correct model.
Needs to be a really low-budget hub to require binning the whole thing.
BareNecessities
Take the wheel out and spin it in your hands, or just try to turn the freehub body.
If the brake is locked on, you probably won't be able to pull the lever.
