  • Would re heat the alloy after beating make it less likely to crack? Can't be bothered now it's re sprayed...
It's only preventing the rack from pivoting backwards, most effort is in the legs so of be surprised if it ends up breaking... If it does, the rack comes with two struts so I'll have to start again...
    Thanks for the tip!

(Note: it looks red on the picture, but that's only the discoloration of the epoxy paint, the alloy didn't get that hot)

  • My mistake - I thought you'd got close to a red heat!
If it hasn't cracked already, it should be ok - you'd see cracks starting as you beat the ends to shape, by which time it's probably too late. I was trying to add a bit more information to your idea if anyone else wants to try this - what you've done looks fine and I'm very much in favour of making things fit properly.
Re-heating at this stage will result in a 'softer' material - less likely to suffer brittle failure but more likely to distort under load. This might be a good thing (compliance / accommodation of variations in thickness / better alignment when bolted up) or not so good (elongated holes, bolts becoming loose) - very much a case of try it and see.

  • y u no bigxtop?

because I don't like bar-mounted hardware. I might want to put on Aerobars and I certainly want my lighting from the bar so management is easy. No klikfix here please!

  • Ben thanks for this list! Considering getting one for the revamped commuter/light tourer but don't want to get a decauler (sp?), think they look kinda ugly. But don't want the rattle, slippage which you have without. Also finding it hard to find carbon disc mount forks which can fit both mudguards and front rack (thinking small nitto m12/m18 or similar) do you have a similar list?
Fork is to fit on a Genesis day one, though I'm thinking of getting a ti frame made to similar dimensions...

  • I'll put down a few thoughts on racks etc. later Corny. I agree with you a decaleur (think that's right) is an ugly solution, even uglier when having to mod your bag to fit it.

  • You can use a Nitto M18 with p-clips/hose clamps if you need.

  • Not really down with using p clips or any sort of clamp on carbon forks!

  • That's fair enough. I keep seeing new gravel/adventure bikes coming out with carbon forks and lowrider bosses, but I can't find any that are actually available on their own...

  • Yeah that's the difficulty. Not looking to get heavy steel forks on a bike I'm trying to make lighter, and would swap the forks from the Genesis I have onto the new frame, except it would make that frame difficult to sell on...
Seen a couple of croix de fer forks on eBay but may have to see if I can get some custom ones made up, though will be pricey...

  • If your frame isn't for tapered steerer, the Croix de Fer carbon forks fits your requirements and can be bought separately ( or used to)

  • @veLLo, @hamrack, @benjam

Been doing a bit of searching, have emailed Whisky and Wound Up, to see if they can cannabalise some of their existing forks and merge them to make a super fork for me.

    but found these alternatives.
planet x, ugly colours, looks like it has a mount for a front rack of some kind, but no eyelets for a mudguard, but I could get round that, plus it's cheap

or there's this from Aprebic, who I've never heard of, but seems to fit the bill, canti mounts, mudguard eyelets and disc mounts, have no idea about price or quality...

  • PX fork - need to check are they actually rack mounts or just mid-fork eyelets to mount mudguards?

If you want to go light, why are you putting a rack on the bike? Soft luggage not a better option? How much do you intend to carry/is on-the-go access required etc.

  • more wanting a small rack, ala nitto m12, so I can go a bit randonneur, and possibly do without the musette I carry to and from work..
And the rack shouldn't add that much extra weight, also I like the idea of having a bag up front which I can get into easily.

didn't know that mid fork eyelet might be for mudguards, confuses things.

  • If canti mounts are for rack only, it may look a bit agricultural, the planet x option would be neater maybe. Will you re spray anyway?

Also the px has conical steerer, not the other one, which one's yours?

  • Ok, if you want access on the go then fair enough.

I'd contact PX - they only specify that the bike has mudguard eyelets and those are the only eyelets on the fork, they sell london road specific guards that mount to the midblade...

  • depends on how much I spend on the frame and what colour I could get it in.

Just pinged them an email to find out if the fork will actually take a front rack and mudguards. As, as @andy_k pointed out those mid fork mounts could just be for the mudguard.

In terms of the agricultural nature of the canti mounted option, I'll take that over not having the front rack, otherwise I've got to go steel forks and then the weight drives back up again...

  • New Salsa Vaya carbon forks have rack and hidden fender mounts: http://salsacycles.com/culture/vaya_updated_for_2017_in_stock_now

Not sure if/when they will be available aftermarket.

Niner RLT forks another option but again, unsure if available as fork-only.

  • they sell london road specific guards that mount to the midblade...

Do they?? I'm quite proud of my stay-bending bodge to fit Chromoplastics, although I've got no idea whether they're suitable for rack mounting. (I use rear rack + handlebar bag as below.)

Bookmarked this a while ago when looking for something similar, someone on here has one I think.

M18 would work, has disc mounts mudguard mounts.

  • looks perfect, only thing is one review mentioned it was difficult to use with disc hubs, fork leg too wide or some such... do you remember who on here has it? Would be good to ask them how it's been!

Would probably be a suck it and see proposition, but it's not hugely expensive so could be an option..

  • Ah right, cheers. Must be a recent product or they were out of stock when I ordered the bike, as it wasn't on the build option. Might have saved a few minutes of faffing and improvisation, but the Chromoplastics fit fine anyway.

  • yeah I had one on my old cx bike but never got round to using the disc mounts as I was running cantis. Worked well enough, not too heavy/flexy.

  • Actually, re read your posts, I think i don't understand what you need, my English is tired at the moment...
Don't you current forks have all the needed mounts (mudguards, low rider, etc.. ).

If you need a small front rack with no low rider, bodge a Vavert front rack like I did. Very cheap, light enough. Good size for a small bag.
