Yeah I've had some super sketchy moments ascending with a lot of load over the rear wheel

Never had troubles with it (and climbed some veryn very steep hills in Italy with +20 kg on the back). But that's maybe because I mostly travel with a mtb (have a longer wheelbase). Last winter I packed less weight on my Carrera roadbike and that wasn't very comfy, indeed.

It was also the fact it was easier and cheaper to get a rear rack and panniers, any bike can accept this.

Front load however, need some eyelit on the fork, a suitable rack that doesn't cause too much flex, and a smaller front panniets.
