congrats! 'ability to ride a tandem whilst wearing' was a key consideration in dress choice, I believe. Not so much with the footwear though.
@umop3pisdn not an ideal solution but my ghetto/stuck in the wilds method is to stick a screwdriver through the pin hole and turn crank around against the screwdriver. Not exactly the right way to do it, but it works...
