• A southern route is only sensible if it cuts an enormous amount of climbing, presumably that means that hippy would want to stay in the 'comparative' flatlands of northern Italy for as long as possible. Possibly following the route taken by the first control car? I don't know the area other than looking at the tracking maps though.

    Twiting him to ask if he means to be going that way is probably cheating isn't it.

  • That's a long way round, even allowing for lack of climbing. And the roads around Milan, Bergamo, Brescia and Lake Garda are very busy.

    The benefits of going the way he seems to be heading is warmer weather, as generally the south side of the Alps is much warmer than the north side, slightly less climbing, but, probably most importantly, much less time at high altitude where poor weather can have a higher impact.

  • Couldn't he skirt Verona and come at it from Belluno? Epic detour but looks much flatter...
