Barely needed the tool to take the lockring off- and the face of the splines show wear which I think indicates that the spider was climbing the splines under load.
I'm pretty relieved to finally find something wrong - the crank is now back together, at 53Nm, with Loctite 243. I'll reassemble and then have everything crossed for it fixing the problem tomorrow.
If it does then it's one more BB30 fault that wasn't the BB30....
