  • If that cannondale was mine, I'd take it back to bare metal in the areas where it has bubbled up.

Obviously aluminium is porous so any moisture on the inside or the outside of the frame will work its way in and you can never usually tell how deep it's gone until you sand it down.
If the frame has been ridden in the wet, it will be internally and externally contaminated with salt etc. Moisture will eventually work its way out but the salt will stay, waiting for the next time for it to get wet.

Not sure how easy you'll be able to access that area from pictures, but just have a poke around inside the frame and see if anything comes out, will obviously be a milky white powder.

I'd definitely recommend flushing the frame internally to remove any contaminants, then sand the areas down and repaint. Once finished give your frame a heathy coating of wax and it should be ok.

I'm not sure whether it's an age thing or a paint thing... lots of Trek and Cannondale frames of this era suffer from this really badly! If you do decide to repaint, make sure you're not painting in a damp shed and you degrease the surface before you spray (salt from your hands isn't good under paint!). Also use a good quality self-etching primer!

  • meh, ignore ^ this guy

  • just leave it out in the rain mate

  • You've had/have some nice bikes just flicking through to what people are up to.

Just bought my first frame and got a wheelset to start building up to commute to work. I'm based in Islington and work in East.

Gonna start a thread on here and see where it ends up.

  • Thanks!

    Do it.

  • Sold Cannondale.

    Too big, didn't like.

Still want to try roadie douchebag life.

Got this in a swaps from the very nice @aka

    Kinda looks like this.

    Pretty fugly.

Stripped the paint off the frame (and sanded the fork)

    Primer.

    2 layers of paint.

    Annnd finally looks like this.

Getting a mish mash 105 groupset off @BlesUp and have all the rest of the bits.

Ordered some gumwalls for it yesterday.

And getting @mariofuckinghantous to cut me some gloss black decals for it.

  • Honestly I think it looks piff.

  • Not bad at all!good job, lets see the result!

  • Solid improvement! Could have gone a bit more exciting though. Jamis decals?

  • Ha yeah not the most exciting.

    But.

Black was cheap, and I'm planning to use this for winter. To commute on. And never clean.

Not Jamis decals, mixture of my forum name and a thing about my dog.

  • Cheers, I am pretty happy with the finish.

Will probably end up needing your wheelset too!

  • Bless fam.
When I'm back on ends we'll sort a lil dealio

  • Built this up again, killed my knees. Seat was too low, tyres are too big and rub both ends.

Will probably get un built when the road bike gets built.

Speaking of, have pretty much all of the parts for the road bike now apart from wheels.

Thinking of painting some abstract stripes on it or something.

  • You need some wheels?
Got some miche beaters you can have for £20 if wants.

  • If they are for gears, but otherwise I'm getting some from blessy bless @BlesUp

  • That's nice bike sad to see it unbuilt

  • My bad.. Should have read more. Yes they are gears. With shimano freehub and block. If it doesn't work out with bles man they are yours

  • Great bunch of bikes, really into that Nelson! happily following along now :)

  • Are they 28c? Was going to try on my nelson

  • Nice nice 👍🏼
