  • I think I read somewhere that a large proportion of, if not all, spectacular images of space/nature are colour enhanced in some way, so I'd hazard a guess that they just create them themselves with saturation, layers, filters etc. You can do incredible things with even the most basic of editing software, provided the detail is there in the image to begin with.

The complex electronic detectors in the Hubble telescope for example, only provide images in black and white. Literally every colour image you've seen from Hubble will have been created by someone in post-production. Usually for one of a number of reasons: colour corrected for a 'like-the-human-eye representation', wildy incorrect colours to accentuate structural details, enhanced for sheer beauty etc.

  • Thanks. Makes me feel less 'bad' out mine now. Will try again tonight a bit later to see if I can improve the images.

  • That sort of Milky Way colour is doable without too much jiggery pokery on your computer. You will get more of a red response with a camera that has had its IR filter removed but that is a fiddly job. Accurate tracking and long exposures are needed, as well as a lack of light pollution. I'd be keen to see how your Milky Way shots are looking; I am off to a dark bit of Italy soon, armed with a 10mm lens and a tracking mount. One thing is certain, namely that I will have mosquito bites when I return.

The one below was actually without a tracking mount but I had to boost the levels (and thus also the noise) to get it looking like this.

  • Yeah, its a balance of having a wide enough lens to get the longest exposure without getting star trails and finding the sweet spot with the ISO.

    I got these with a 6D @ iso 6400 & 10000 and 40mm f/2.8 - the lens being the limiting factor in exposure time.

Then lots of fuckery in Lightroom ;)

  • As said above, dicking about in LR with shadows and highlights is likely to be yr friend assuming yr image isn't too noisy ISO-wise. This can be fixed with judicious use of noise reduction and sharpening. A duplicate layer with the high pass filter and blending set to "Overlay" at a relatively low level can help (too much will look shite and is the reserve of twats who do HDR portraits). Another duplicate layer with shadow and highlight adjustments can work too.

  • You're not going to get as rich colour on a 1" sensor compact compared with a high-end full-frame DSLR, though. And any noise reduction will mute the colour rendition.

  • Not been on LFGSS for a while. Just caught up on all the fantastic work in this thread. Some great stuff!

I've been trying to up my portrait game recently.

  • Really nice shot, light and background perfect.

  • Really like these. Bonus points for Blackstock Road. Always wanted to pop in to that Ethiopian Deli...

  • Yeah, its nuts when you put it like that. Little'un looks a lot cleaner than I'd imagined for just 15 minutes fresh.

  • Fun with remote release and the flash.
