When it become too long, the housing enter at a more awkward angle, which result in the housing hitting the wall of the tubing.
I have shorten the housing on a customer's CAAD12 Disc last week, allowing the housing to enter the frame in a less severe angle, hopefully it work (since the customer haven't yet to return after this).

If it's like mine, housing was long but okay, until I slammed the stem and then it became too long, as Ed points out.
I think it's compounded by being so tight around the BB so there is no option to move the slack more evenly throughout the frame
