Do you reckon that would be safer? It would also mean chopping the threading off a reasonably rare pair of P2 threaded 1 1/8" forks which I'm a little reluctant to do.

You won't need to chop anything, you just plonk it in the top, tighten it up and treat it as extra steerer

What about the star nut?
Either it's the extender with a quill and therefore I'm still in same predicament or it's one of the ones that sits over the tope of the steerer which I can't use without chopping because I can't clamp onto threading.
