My Garmin (405, 4 and a bit years old!) has finally started going crazy and today crapped out totally less than .2 miles into a 5 mile race.
Any recommendations? I would love a Fenix 3 HR but I don't think I need it to do all the things it does.
Anyone got any ideas? I use an Edge for cycling. I don't swim. I quite like the idea of something I can wear as a tracker 24/7, and would like optical HR for races where I don't want a chest strap.
What do we reckon?

How was it?

Forerunner 235. Just got it but am pretty pleased with it so far (apart from teething problems initially with the connect app). Works primarily as a running watch but also does activity tracking.

Ya see I've narrowed to the 225 or the 235, need to read up on the differences. Good to hear you get on with the 235, it's a decent looking watch too.
Was actually nice racing without pace, but I miss the post race analysis and wouldn't want to do it on a longer/unfamiliar course.

I think the 235 estimates Vo2 max but the 225 doesn't and that's it.
I'm sure I read that on the DC Rainmaker site when I was looking for a watch with a HR monitor so might be worth checking there. -

It was brilliant, thanks! I hit ATW and decided I was a bit short on time and wary of getting lost in the park, so just carried on down ATW to the Ashton canal and ran back. I kind of regret it now, as the park/cemetery looked lovely and I would have liked to see the Velodrome.
I should have gotten up earlier! Thanks for the tip, much better than doing laps of central Manchester.

If that's it I'll take the saving!
Read the DCr review of 235 again earlier so I'll read the 22 and use his comparison tool which is pretty good.

Nice one, glad it worked for you. I've thought up another loop out towards Salford Quays & back if you need variety for the future just shout.

If that's it I'll take the saving!
That was my thinking (although I still haven't actually got around to getting one yet...)

I find the smart notifications very useful for meetings when you don't want to look like you're on your phone to.

what a hot session this evening. 5 minutes tempo, 10x300, another 5 minutes tempo.

I did the Ashridge Half this weekend, extremely fun trail "race" including some stairs in a forest and hilariously steep hills. Managed to accidentally throw myself down one of them about halfway round and smashed my knee open so the later pictures have a bit more blood - but this is me at miles 2 and 3. I was having fun the whole time, honest!

From Deansgate Station drop onto the Canal at d'gate locks and head out towards Old Trafford on c.path past Pomona.
Where path goes over canal either cross ped crossing and head down old stairs into Quayside or find other way (other options, e.g. pop out by footy hotel and head across from there, or ditto from viccy warehouse).
With water on right run out to a bridge and cross there e.g lowry/bbc area.
Keep water on right as best as possible and eventually pick up ship canal path past all the graffiti you can see from tram/train. Keep going until you get back into town near MOSI (Princess Bridge?)
There was building work near end a while back but think this is finished?

Ouch!

Makes sense, thanks!

looks like a top run.
How serious is the knee injury?
-
• #13847
Ah it'll be fine, it's swollen and bruised and the skin has mainly been replaced by a weeping scab but it's less painful than my ingrowing toenail. My right side hates me right now.

Are you aloud to swim in Duddington loch?

Ahhhh I had no idea, I was running as well, my club put the race on.
Glad you enjoyed it (knee aside) I'm very lucky to be able to run those trails all the time.
Awesome, that is sorted then.
Just sat in Soup Kitchen in the the NQ having a goat curry in order to fuel up for the run tomorrow. And a few Gamma Rays. For the carbohydrates.
