Front is a little twitchy no-handed due to the relatively steep head angle.
Ride with a handlebar bag on?
Mine's always twitchy, but because I always have a handlebar bag on, it's not really noticable.
I get what you mean by the brake levers, it never work on bicycle with compact drop, as the compact drop is designed for the long reach of the modern levers, old style handlebar were designed to ride with your hand on the bar, not the brake levers, like this;
As for the chain dropping, very stupid question but have you adjusted the H limiter on the derailleur?

I did wonder about those old bars if the tops/ramps are supposed to be used more. I don't mind the levers for the most part, but it's a little too lumpy when I'm tired and braking from the tops is pretty difficult.
The twitchyness was still there with a bag (and lock) on the front, but less than unloaded. Shimmies horribly if I let go downhill on the way to work sometimes.
What do you mean about the h-limiter? How will that stop the chain flicking off the top of the chainring?

Would screwing in the h-limit effectively increase cage tension and make the shifts less snappy? Not used it like that
-
• #230
Are we talking about the same thing? The L and H screw or the big screw that sit on the hanger?
The H (high) and L (low) screw are to prevent the derailleur from going over the sprocket.

• #231
ah, I was thinking of b-tension. The chain's dropping off the front, not into the spokes
-
• #232
Which side? inside or outside of the chainring?
-
• #233
Outside, when shifting to smaller sprockets. It's all very bouncy

• #234
Sounds like something a narrow wide chainring and/or a medium or short cage derailleur could fix.
-
• #235
Don't especially want to swap the derailleur and a 42t narrow wide would require a crank swap anyway, by which point I might as well put a nicer road double on there.
What's a good price for a Paul Chain Keeper?

Tighten chain a bit might help.

Get narrow wide and Spa Cycles 110bcd crankset for £20.

You're one to talk, mr high stack!
Looking in Spa Cycles they got a super-compact as well with a guard;

Basically a triple but with guard instead, 42/26 look like a great option for the touring bike with a 11-28 for a short ratios.

Had a rummage through the spares bin yesterday and found an unused 104 triple spider (silver), possibly a 42/32 duo setup (need to take a better look at the teeth as these have been used) and a set of Sugino OX601D cranks with 46/30 rings that look in good condition. Dunno if that helps at all...
Found a couple of other spiders I might part with - just need to match up the rings I have to a couple of bikes and figure out the most economical way of getting everything sorted :/

Either the duo or the sugino sound like a good bet. PM me some pics/details?

If TvH doesn't take the Sugino I could haz interest.

Brill, thanks

Photos in here at the bottom, bit dull in the flat at the moment unfortunately, chainring bolts for both, Middleburn for the duo rings, and full stainless for the sugino, just being cleaned at the moment... https://www.flickr.com/gp/andrewkirsfelds/Q2tte2

PM'd Andy.
Spent a few fun/frustrating hours modifying this camera bag with some straps and Velcro cannibalised off a lens case. Basically hand stitching a machine stitch using a machine needle to get it neat enough at the front - really pleased with the result, save for the residue of the shitty failed fabric glue I was trying to reinforce it with. Possibly needs further strengthening with a backplate.
Total cost, ~£25

To Sugino or not to Sugino?
Nice work on the bag!
-
• #248
Suginos it is. First dibs for you if I don't get on with them

Much compact, very Q. Really, really nice cranks.
Need to buy a CX70 mech so in the meantime, Paul.

Those are awesome. Been contemplating getting a set to replace my Sora triple. Wonder if my front derailleur will work with the cranks (smallest ring is 30t, just like Sugino's).
Are you gonna install a front derailleur now? Or just leave the inner ring there, unused? Last question, where did you get them? Hub Jub?
That could be v useful, cheers!
