I might give it a go with some (relatively) coarse paper and a block, see if i can get it past the notches without chewing it up, then step down the grit + get myself a whetstone.
I prefer working out how to do something myself where possible. Although personal experience tells me that's also the best way of fucking something up more than it was to begin with :-D
