Started messing with gyms for the first time this lunchtime. Disappointing - combat was crap and you get barely any xp for them.

Taken 2 gyms on the thames path, my understanding of the gyms is you get hardly any xp for taking them but lots of stuff for holding them.

Is it just me or is there a bit of a flaw in the logic of the game in that there's no point in collecting/investing time in rare pokemon because it's impossible to collect enough of the same one to power it up to a decent level?

Nearly every gym I see is held by a high level Hypno because Drowsee's are so common.

Am I missing something in the game here regarding making a pokemon stronger without collecting lots of the same ones? I feel this is where the gyms come in but I can't work it out... (my Pokemon just get destroyed within seconds even at team-owned gyms).

i think the point is when you level enough the rare ones you find will be high powered already. maybe the spawn rate changes as you progress too.

saw a gym near me being held by a lvl22 with a horse pokemon with fire for hair (i dont know my pokemons yet) that was way over 1000 cp. that person must have been grinding like mad.
