but there's also a helluva lot of nasty nationalistic nonsense out there which wouldn't look out of place on the football terraces.
"Such was the passion that the first Tour created in spectators and riders that Desgrange said the 1904 Tour de France would be the last. Cheating was rife and riders were beaten up by rival fans as they neared the top of the col de la République, sometimes called the col du Grand Bois, outside St-Étienne."

Wasn't able to see it live so came home, had an old-man nap, and went to twitter for the final two kilometres, having avoided any spoilers elsewhere. Below the video there is a screengrab of Froome running up the road. I think, if that's not a photoshop then wtf happened today? Never watched a race before anticipating the moment when the yellow jersey carries on on foot.

The approach is going to be even crazier than usual then.
This happened

Mollena as big spoon, Froom as little spoon, Porte as a spare spoon.

Someone at Cyclingnews is a Smiths fan:
Chris Froome (Sky) can smile about it now but at the time it was terrible. -

I think your prediction might be right this time
At this point, I don't really know what to predict for tomorrow or what kind of horrible consequences it might have. I feel like the opposite of Paul the Octopus.

Je ne comprends pas.
You go to work, drink a beer, come home and Froome's forlornly running up a mountain, then riding a circus bike, then crying himself over the line....
Then gets put back in yellow.
Yates should be gutted-freak incidents are part and parcel imhop and there's been many other occasions where the disadvantaged party has been left to suck it or simply been injured and unable to continue. Hoogerland anyone? Ted King? You either play the magnanimous arbitrator for all people or none at all...

Just keep leaning to the left, it'll be fine.

That's what someone said to Gerrans.
It wasn't fine though.

What's the point of those neutral service bikes, if nobody...well, not everyone... can clip in to them?
-
• #1323
Apparently they gave him the nearest one as he was so close to the line, rather than taking longer to find him one with the right pedals

Hoogerland wasn't in contention for the GC so the time loss wasn't relevant to him. Having managed to finish and retain the polka dot jersey, there really wasn't a lot that the race organisers could do to redress the damage done.
I thought that the crash that affected Ted King was neutralised but it was his inability to finish a subsequent stage within the time limit that got him cut out. I'm not sure that you would have offered him but it seems like the type of cut out that would have been repeated over and again.
In contrast to those two incidents, Froome, Mollema and Porte were all in GC contention. Froome isn't injured or unable to continue but left without access to a bike that he could use to continue the race. He wasn't given his time as if he hadn't crashed but given the same time as the other two riders who's bikes hadn't been critically damaged.I think from that perspective, all three riders you example have been treated equally according to their circumstances. What to you feel should have been offered to either Hoogerland or King in order for them as to have been treated equally to Froome today?

Although I do think it's s fair decision I do think that the time loss would have made for more interesting riding. What with the ITT tomorrow and everything.
That said there are far too many incident with flippin motos where they influence results, and injure and even kill riders. Today was a balls up by the organisers and motos, it needs to be sorted out and stopped from happening ever.
Yeah I get the Armstrong fallout, but there's also a helluva lot of nasty nationalistic nonsense out there which wouldn't look out of place on the football terraces.
