I think its the effort required of Froome to gain that 12 seconds, which could have been saved and put to better effect on a TT or mountain finish

You've got to factor in the psychological benefits too, Quintana will be wondering where Froome is going to attack him next.

The psychological advantage of stuffing your opponents with clever and powerful riding is probably worth more than the time he took. I expect he will still crush today's stage.

The 5 live commentators were just questioning whether the 12 second gain was worth the effort.
Surely 12 seconds is always worth a push? I know tours have been won by big margins recently but 12 seconds is a decent chunk to take from a stage where you were just expecting to maintain.
