I thought I'd boot up my old Mac 512k and see if it still worked. It did for a while, but then there was a sizzling sound and a lot of thick acrid smoke pouring out of the top vents. Oddly it was still working at this time, but I think it might be toast. I tried my Mac plus too, and it boots but the screen is black. Think that might be toast too.

I returned that gold macbook, what should I get next to "test"?
-
• #9405
Why did you return it? I am really getting annoyed at the lack of Pro updates, I NEED (sort of) a new machine...
-
• #9406
Why did you return it?
Partly for lols as my 'need' will only start when I a done with this gig end of this month and partly because I am kinda convinced that I need the M7 version. Impressive score that. VERY close to entry level 13 inch MBP.

That second links an Air?
But yeah tempted by one of them too actually.
Oh god.
Older ones are getting old off dead cheap too... -
• #9408
If you want to buy to try then give it a go. Otherwise don't. I did (the gold one). Its very close so I think M7 would be perfect .. just too pricey atm.

Bah, got repair costs back for my MBP... £1300 for a laptop that only cost me 1200 :(
Anyone want to buy a water/squash damaged laptop for more that the cost they charged for an "repair valuation"?

Finally replaced my dead Laptop.
Bought a mid-2014 MBP 13"
Hopefully its in as Nice functional condition as described. First Apple Product. But I've been play With a mates mac and I think I like the OS.
Have a replacement mobile on the way too. Wanted an Iphone to keep Things simple. But work wont buy them in. So I've ordered a Hauwei P9, as that seemed the highest value phone they'd give me. The plan was to try and swap it for an Iphone. But reviews make it sound like a Nice phone.
Is there really much advantage to running an iphone With Your mac?

Is there really much advantage to running an iphone With Your mac?
Yes, lots of reasons: handoff, seamless syncing of contacts, bookmarks and calendars, taking/making calls on your Mac etc.

I really want the bookmark thing. I'm always finding syuff on my phone then having to refind it or email it to myself later.
Fecking faff though. Plus slightly dishonest to Accept a New phone from work intending to instantly sell/swap it.
-
• #9414
Not trying to tell you what to do, but are you sure you can sell your work phone? I know I'd get in all manner of problems if I sold mine, they definitely consider it their property still.
-
• #9415
I was told the policey was to give 4500nok towards a phone. That they order. They wont order me an iphone because they had issues With iphones in the past.
So its mine.
Except they hold the reciept and garantee.
So I have to admitt I dont feel 100% about it.

so you can do pretty much all the continuity stuff with Android as well.
I use MBP for work, but find the google eco system more useful since you can access it from any browser, on any platform.

Got some file-finding issues here, would love some advice
I'm running 2 external hdd's as time machine backups. For whatever reason, I needed to restore a dropbox folder I've gotten disconnected from.
I plug in backup hdd 1, and it's dead. Boo.
I plug in hdd 2, thinking I'm well smart running two separate backups. As I browse the oldest backup I can see the whole dropbox folder I need to restore, so all should be fine. But, as it's a Time Machine disc, it goest straight ahead and starts the next backup, and subsequently deleting the very files I need, as they're the oldest ones saved...
If I now look in the oldest Time Machine backup, the particular dropbox-folder is empty, but if I search the finder for .psd, I can see all the files I need, but I can't access them. I can see when they're created and how big they are, but that's it, the file itself doesn't seem to have any reference to it.
Anyone else had this problem and can give me any pointers? As it work, I'm pretty keen to get it sorted, and spending on recovery software is definitely on the cards. I've already run it through Disk Drill but it says it can't find any deleted files...
Also - fuuuuuuuuuck!

• #9418
you said you've looked at the oldest backup, is there nothing if you come towards the more recent backups in time machine? Sorry if that sounds obvious, just going through things in my head.
-
• #9419
How are you trying to view the files? Are you actually using the time machine app or just in finder? You should be able to access each backup individually and scroll through them all, they'll be arranged by date.
The only reason they'd be deleted is if the drive isn't big enough and it's deleted the older backup to make space for the new stuff

^^ Gone through everything, it's gone everywhere
^ Checked both through TM and through finder, nothing anywhere.
Also asked on the Apple forums, and it seems like TM deletes files in a different way to the OS (sounds a bit odd, no?) which makes them much harder to restore. I ran some restore software overnight, but no luck.
The files I could see was supposedly from an old index, ie just meta data.
Live and learn I think. Gonna try and see if I can get the other hdd to work with a different adaptor. Then I'll read up about cloud backups.

Would really like a 15 inch retina MacBook Air with tons of storage and enough chops for work stuff and a bit of gaming.
Probably impossible but it would be nice.
Having had to actually carry my MBP around this week made me realise how bloody heavy it is.

I'm hoping the new MBP is going to be about as light as you can make a 15"er.
The VVM on my iPhone has stopped working since Tue/Wed last week, tried resetting the network setting, resetting my mailbox etc, the only thing that changed the same sort of time as the VM stopped working was that I changed my tariff with 02, I made sure they put me on an iPhone tariff, so can this be the cause of my VVM not working? Data and everything else is working as normal.
Tried calling O2 but the waiting time is extremely long so want to make sure it isn't sth to do with my phone that I can fix before listening to the same song on a forever loop...
