  • Decided on going for this as my first venture into gears:

Before it gets to me, I'm having a think about what to kit it out with. Aiming for a HHSRB stealth machine.

Thinking I'm going to get a decent groupset and seeing what I can afford for wheels for the time being with the intention of getting a set with ridiculous deep section rims when I can afford to be silly.

Wiggle have the 5800 groupset at nearly half price, would that be a good way to go?

Happy to look at second hand groupsets if anyone has anything?

  • please sram or campag that.. might just be me but i really hate any shimano chainset since x6xx/79xx series.. superstar components for wheels? (novatec+kinlin is another neat option)

  • Nice. I reckon I'd go SRAM Force 22 on that.

  • Force 22 is a great looking groupset, would certainly fit the stealth look.

Gonna keep a lookout for the best deal as I can't quite stretch to what I've found so far.

    Cheers both

  • Or perhaps an older Force groupset like 2010, but swap out the front mech for the Force 22 with yaw, like I did, cos it works properly!

  • Yeah, they seem to sell on here more often than I expected, I'll keep an eye out!

  • Looks rad, subscribed (plus this is pretty much what i've planned for my next build!)

  • Derailleurs and cassette arrived!

Still need to buy the rest of the group set.

  • Ok, most of the group set is now purchased! Still haven't got the frame back to me as it was delivered to my office in London and I need to get it back home to Berlin!

All I need to finish the group set is the shifters, if anyone has 11 speed sram shifters let me know, preferably force 22.

  • Sorry for the slow progress on this! Finally got the frame and some components home to Berlin!

According to the S/N the frame was made in September 1999 and it is pretty much perfect, it's beautiful!

Crankset was delivered yesterday to London, it was supposed to come when I was there last week but I'll have to get it when I'm back in two weeks.

Determined to have it finished before August so I can get a few nice months of riding in before the harsh Berlin winter.

  • Subbed, welcome to the CAAD club!

  • I've had a right nightmare with receiving parcels here in Germany for this but should finally have everything I ordered two weeks ago by Monday and then should just have to build it up.

I also made a massive noob error and ordered BB30 force 22 cranks so had to order another set and ended up with Rival 22's as they were all that I could find at the time.

Here's the frame on RS21s I'll be using as training wheels for now.

  • Why a force 1 derailleur when you're running 2x? Out of curiosity

  • That's just the box it was sent in, it's a force 22, it did give me a scare when I first opened the package though!

  • Hey now, I roll on a pearly blue caad too. Mines a 4 though.

  • Nice build!

Nice with the look forks too, that's one thing I was concerned with as these forks seem a little heavy but wasn't sure how black forks would look if I swapped them out.

  • Some progress, now just waiting for my cranks which still haven't been delivered!

  • I am having a nightmare setting up my front derailleur.

Following the installation instructions, I tighten the lower limit screw to pull the derailleur out as far as it will go, however this doesn't seem far enough to move the chain from the lower chainring to the upper. I'm not going to be able to get up there if it won't change up there at it's limit.

I've removed the cranks to see if there is some sort of washer pulling the cranks further away from the frame but nothing.

I've very confused on this and am close to finding a LBS as I haven't got one since moving to Germany and please excuse shitty pedals, my Keos will be coming from England shortly.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

  • Have you installed and adjusted gears before? It can be a bit tricky, especially if it's your first time.

Looks like your derailleur is mounted too high. Should be more like this:

The distance between the teeth of the chainring and the lower part of the outside of the derailleur should be around 1-2mm.

About the chain not shifting onto the large chainring: without the shifter cable properly attached to the derailleur and the tension set, the derailleur will be in its resting position (thus the space between the derailleur and the chain).

Let's say the derailleur is properly adjusted. Once you shift upwards, you pull the cable and the tension will move the derailleur outboard, pushing the chain and therefor shifting it onto the large chainring. You can move the derailleur by hand without the cable attached to the derailleur to see this. The spring is quite strong so you have to use some force (heh).

I hope I'm understanding you correctly. Look up some tutorials on how to set up derailleurs on YouTube. There are some really handy ones, for example from GCN.

  • I've not, I'm going by the manuals and YouTube.

Understood about the height, I've been moving it around to see if I can get it further out, that's now lower.

Seems to be getting there with a bit of extra cable tension but only seems to shift up when I really hold the shifter in.

I'll look at it further tomorrow.

    Thanks for the tips.

  • I've been watching it on repeat haha!

But I think I'm getting somewhere.

  • I think I'm getting somewhere.

    Good to hear.

Final tip: make sure the derailleur is properly aligned though, so parallel to the large chainring. In your pictures it seems like it's angled a bit.

    Good luck!

  • Got the bicycle out for a quick spin tonight, gears need a little fine tuning but not so bad.

Just need to wrap the bars and sort my pedals. I'll probably look for an inline seat post and maybe a shorter stem, can't tell if I'm reaching a little far or not tbh.
