The hole is too small for a gear cable or gear cable ferrule to go in there.

Is it this thing I need?

Yes, campag still includes them in the shifters box, but no one else does apparently.
SJS cycles ones works as well but are slightly larger (for brake outers).

You're bound to get some criticism from people who don't actually ride bikes - like the Nazis who seem to live in the HHSB, HHSRB, Bike Porn and NJS threads.

I know how bike fit works. But it's a classically proportioned bike, so I would have expected less exposed post.

It's an observation, not a criticism - you seem to have quite a sensitive disposition.

Don't assume everything always has to be about you.
