  • What Ironman are you doing?

That is a pretty heavy brick session right there!

  • IM Wales (Tenby) in September.

Daughter was going for a sleepover straight from school so I had extra hours on my usual training day (don't work Fridays) so I thought I'd make best use of the extra time. Lasted ok in the evening for friend's birthday drinks too, ended up in Pix Pintxos when the pub shut and even stayed awake on the night bus home. My word I needed the lie-in this morning.

Feeling it all today though. Hangover fading but quads sore and a slight ache in one calf but nothing that won't go away in a short while. Massive bruise on knee from Thursday's 5-a-side has come up nicely too.

Will see how legs are feeling for a gentle 10k run tomorrow morning. Need to as I've been avoiding the running in the last couple of weeks.

T1 was 56 minutes (out of pool, get changed, walk 1km home via shops, faff, have a drink and something to eat, get changed into cycling stuff, sort out bottles, get bike out of bike bunker, pump up tyres, chat to neighbour, eventually set off).

T2 was 21 minutes (get home, sign for parcel for upstairs neighbour, put bike away, get changed into running stuff, faff, rehydrate, faff some more, finally get under way)

  • Half-term last week so swimming was disrupted. The times I was child free there were no lanes at the local pool and the times the lanes were there I was too busy being a parent (or practising benign neglect). Oh well.

Last week called for 1h40 swim, 3h15 bike, 3h run for 7h55 total. I managed 0 swim, 1h55 run + 1h40 5-a-side for 3h35, and a tiny 10h56 on the bike (thanks to commuting and a 200km Audax yesterday). Weekly total of 14h31.

Legs feel a little zonked today but I did my usual 10 minutes of kick whilst my daughter was having her swimming lesson and the hour in the cool water of the pool makes the legs feel so much better. Will need to as I'm doing cycle-in/run-home run-in/cycle home on Tue/Thu days in the office.

This week calls for 2h30/6h10/3h15 for 11h55. That should be possible if I pull my finger out on Wednesday and don't leave it too late to go to the pool. Will take the fixed around RP for the first time in a while too.

  • Missed the Enduroman ultra-tri festival this weekend due to being abroad, it was one of the greats. Triple Iron was possibly the closest in history, first and second split by five seconds after 50 hours. Even better, in third place was none other than Pritchard from Dirty Sanchez, who is now a vegan triathlete. He did it in a bloody good time too.

  • Do they do 3 x distance or do they do 3 x tri?

Enjoying the seemingly endless training hours at the moment and not feeling too fatigued. Couple of different runs to switch things up (running home from work in the heat the other evening rather than running in during the cool morning), also Sunday's 200km ride didn't take as much out of my legs as I thought it would (given how I was feeling at the end) so I should be able to slot in all the running I wanted to this week. No pub tomorrow night should have me feeling less grotty on Friday too for big swim and then 2h30 thrash around RP on the bike.

  • Seeing some symptons of overtraining these days. Irritable mood, hard to fall asleep, no desire to cook, dreading workouts etc. Aches and pains, feel constantly tired. Did a short run the other day @ 160 HR, felt like my legs were about to fall off.

Thing is, the sessions haven't (hasn't?) been that intense lately. All though, I have been doing some longer rides in the weekends which I suspect are the culprits. Planning to take it easy this weekend but then I realized, all my hobbies are based around exercise. Bored already. Might buy a book or something. Or watch the Criterium.

  • Enjoying the seemingly endless training hours at the moment and not feeling too fatigued.

Oh what difference a day makes. Almost straight after posting that 3 weeks ago I had a cut on my foot between the ball of the foot and toes, lengthways not sideways and about half an inch long. No idea how it happened, it looks a bit like the cuts you can get from athletes foot (which I seem to battle constantly against) but unusual to get them lengthways and they're usually in a fold of the skin and this isn't.

It has made running painful (5-a-side was okay as it is more stop/start and less constant pounding). Combine that with messed up schedule due to childcare arrangements and very busy workload and I've done next to nothing in the last 3 weeks.

In fact, my entire 4 week BASE1 block of training was supposed to contain 49h10m of training and I've managed a total of 14h18m (with another ~4h to come if I can be arsed).

    Last proper swim: Jun 17th
    Last proper run: Jun 7th
    Last proper ride: Jun 5th

I should have lost 2kg during the month but I've put on 1kg. Ah well.

    On the plus side...

TSB is amazing. +36 (at the expense of 18 CTL thobut).

The foot seems to be healing well (I'll start back running with a parkrun on Saturday) and it's still 12 weeks to go to IM Wales, so I've got enough time if I pull my finger out. I was never going to set an amazing time on my first as I simply haven't lost the weight I needed to, but I'll get round and was hoping for under 14h (1h15 swim, 7h30 bike, 5h run with 15min T1+T2). I'll still take 15h though if I fall apart on the run (most likely).

Makes me wonder about the Mersey Roads 24h TT, as that's just over 3 weeks away and I've done bugger all on the bike since a 200km Audax a few weeks ago. But I may as well do that even if I DNF[1] or have hours off the bike as my wife/daughter are away (my 8 weeks of holiday a year only stretch so far) so I'd only be sitting at home alone that weekend wishing I was riding anyway. Again, a shit debut will make it easier to PB next time. I won't be pushing myself hard the entire time, I'll just be riding it a little bit faster/harder than I would a 600km Audax and having a lot less time stopped. 24.5kph average for 22.5h = 551.2km = 342 miles.

45h50m in the next 4 week block (BASE2) of training. Given that I hope to do 22h30m+ of cycling in one day I should be able to keep up with that, just have to throw in lots of gentle running and keep the swimming up in the surrounding weeks, then worry about some proper structured training in the next block (BASE3: 64h in 4 weeks) before the taper.

    1. Planning to fail isn't a problem for me. I'm bloody minded enough that I tend to keep on going.
  • 10 days to go and 3 days into taper, I seem to be hungry and thirsty the whole time, thirst isn't a problem but having to be strict with myself on the food front, as I'm not burning as much and there's not point putting on weight now!

only thing that isn't sorted is kit, as there was some miscommunication between my club kit person and the supplier and the kit I ordered to replace the one I shredded when I came off in June didn't get made with the rest of the kit in the June order but the supplier is doing all the can, currently have a prototype suit with mine due to arrive on Wednesday, will prob race in prototype suit as I wont get a chance to test the other kit before the day and at least I have a short tri race this weekend to test the kit in, plus a few bits of training here and there.

is apparently a £300 bit of kit so expecting it to be pretty incredible, worth at least a million watts on the bike and a load of speed on the run ;)

Feeling good otherwise, I've hit my target swim CSS of 1:30, PB'd at half marathon, and 50 and 100 mile TT this year, seem to have finally fully recovered full shoulder mobility post crash, just a waiting and then execution game now!

  • Do they do 3 x distance or do they do 3 x tri?

Sorry, missed this - triple distance, so 7.2m swim, 336m bike, triple mara. Believe it's the hillest/hardest triple IM course ever.

  • Well, I'm doomed!

Lake Zurich is already 24C and I have no buoyancy without a wetsuit. #toolean

    I can swim 3.8k in a wetsuit. Without, 1000m is a struggle. :(

  • Genuine question but are you allowed to wear buoyancy shorts in a non wetsuit swim?

Did my second tri of the year yesterday and won! Second year in a row at the bananaman team time trial, you have to race as a three so making a balanced team who will stick together is the first and most important task, and then try to go as fast as you can without dropping people on the bike or run!

Great fun and probably the fastest run I've done all year, but that's probably more about the fact that I haven't run very fast all year!

  • So, I am trying to decide what to wear in my first olympic tri.. Have been looking at one piece suits but have had a hard time finding one that fits my ridiculously long torso. Two piece suits are probably a better option for me but it means forking out even more money. And quite frankly, I don't know yet if I will be entering more triathlons after this one. The padding also seems really thin on these so I might just race in swim jammers and get a tri top. Which means that if I want to do time trials at a later point I can combine the tri top with proper padded shorts.

Any advice? How much does the thin tri padding actually help on the bike?

  • Way to go! What was the distance?

  • 800m swim, 32k bike and 7.5k run, so an unusual distance!

tri padding is usually lighter as tri saddles are a bit more padded, it does help though! how long is your race? my first tri i just wore cycling kit, which was fine for a sprint tri.

you cant wear sleeveless tops for TTing so take that into account...

  • Yeah that makes sense. Thanks for the tip, I didn't know sleeveless isn't allowed in TT's. strange.. do you know why?
I'm doing olympic, so 40k bike leg. Just did a quick 7k ride with jammers and it wasn't that bad. I'm very comfortable on my current saddle so I might just go with this setup. Also, the wetsuit I've got is super tight around the crotch so any space saved during the swim will be much appreciated by my friends down under.

  • Some races allow you to wear a wetsuit anyway but you can't podium. Ironman races will DSQ you if you wear one above 24.5C.

All I can do is wear my swim skin but it doesn't really add any buoyancy just makes you marginally more hydrodynamic.

  • Well apart from anything it's slower....

lots of tri kit is growing sleeves as a result, but personally I think it looks better, and gives more protection from the sun and Tarmac should you be unlucky!

  • Joe Skipper 7h56 at Roth. Flying.

  • Great work at IMUK @Sainsburys_Ed !

  • Thanks, I think my head went into protective mode on the bike worrying about the run as I couldn't seem to push the pedals very hard at all, a decent age group finish though so quite pleased.

I passed someone on the bike with a pannier and did think of you!!

  • Ha, no pannier for me (for IM or for this weekends' 24) although I may have a large seatpack for the 24 as I need to carry a fair bit doing it unsupported.

Entry level wetsuit? Good idea for an entry level triathlete (who still needs to lose weight and move down a wetsuit size) or false economy?

Currently eyeing up a Zone 3 Venture for £106 on wiggle: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/zone3-venture-wetsuit-wiggle-exclusive/

Would save me paying £15 each time I go to Shepperton Lake (will probably go another 10 times between now and September) and avoid needing to rent one for the IM.

Next ones up seem to be £200 to £250 which I'd consider if I wasn't hoping to be 10kg lighter and therefore in a smaller (medium) one sometime next year.

  • I use a zone3 aspire, which is very good, basically as you pay more you get features that make things more comfortable and faster, i.e. more flexibility around the shoulders (actually useful) catch panels (debatable) better neck linings (very useful for avoiding wetsuit rash) then a whole load of stuff like cuffs that make it easier to remove, quick release zips that for the vast majority of IM racers make no difference at all.

obviously worth buying one if you are doing IM...

  • Flying out to Zurich on Thursday, wish me luck!

Right now, Lake Zurich is sitting at 24C. :(

My perhaps optimistic aim is sub-12h based on estimates with ideal conditions (decent weather, wetsuits allowed and feeling fit). Those estimates would be 90m swim, 6h bike leg, 4h marathon and 30mins for faffing.

  • Thanks. Have gone for that cheapo Zone 3 Venture from Wiggle. Hopefully the next day delivery will be in time for me to go to Shepperton for another swim tomorrow.

I think my rental yesterday was an Aspire (forgot to check back on the rental form after the swim). Will see what the Venture is like and probably upgrade when I get my weight down.

    Forgotten how floaty they are.

  • I'd love to hear more about your race if you can face writing about it?
