Yes, or you could really cheap out and go 7-speed, just needs a 3mm spacer under the cassette

FWIW, I put 8-speed SRAM MTB bits on miss.ua's bike. Feel free to substitute Shimano MTB (e.g. M360), there's not enough difference to worry about on a shopping bike. I think triggers are more ergonomic than thumbies. On an 8-speed freehub (double check if you haven't already, there was a 7-speed RM40), you also have the option of 9- or 10-speed which may work out cheaper if you're shopping in the bargain bin, depending on what's cluttering up warehouses.
