  • @haveo That will be awesome! (once the cages are in the bin)

Project "Turn another beater into something to worry about whenever you leave it" is going quite well. Position is much friendlier than with the Nitto drops.

  • Anyone knows where you can get a -17 1 1/4 stem? preferably 130mm

  • Just got a turbo saddle from local classifieds...

Don't have much experience with what would work/look best to mount it to inline or a post with more sweep

  • What would work best would fit best.

  • Its currently replaced a stripped flite on some swept back post mid mounted...

Planning to put some distance on it tonite

  • What saddle should I put on my Langster-cross? I'm thinking cambium in slate... But I can't afford one

  • Black flite and it would come together in a whole other way.

    It's mental! <3

  • I prefer Suntour too (the cyclone derailleur IMHO is better than anything Simplex make), it's only the Retrofriction that stood out of the Simplex line-up.

Glad to see you talking about this as I'm thinking about building a Porteur bike to have around town.

Which Suntours thumbies would fit into the whole Porteur build. Indexed preferably.

And which derailleur to a 7speed hyperglide casette?

Thinking of doing a 1x7 because of bin-build.

Thankful for any pointers you might have @edscoble and @mdcc_tester!

  • This is my girlfriend's bike - bought off here for something like £40 a few years ago. Nothing fancy but she likes it a lot and it's been reliable.

She wants me to put gears on it now though, since we've moved to hilly Bristol.

I don't know what it would have originally run (single speed, hub gear?) but it has no cable stops or derailleur hanger, it's 130 at the back and currently running a single speed kit on what appears to be a decent Shimano 8 speed hub (FH RM40 8).

Putting a Sturmey Archer on it looks expensive as I'd need to get a wheel built up from scratch. I just did this on my Pompino and I'm very happy with it, but think I'm leaning towards going 1x8 derailleur gears on this if possible.

Is there any reason why the following wouldn't work - or is there something else that's a better idea?

    Sunrace 8 speed thumbie + cheap gear hanger + 8 speed 11-32 cassette + claris 8 speed derailleur ?

I guess I'd have to use full length cable housing as there's no stop, but this isn't a mad idea right?

  • ^ ha! I'll steal that for my GF's Centurion Mixte. If it works... ;)

And maybe even my porteur build. Cheers for the supplied links @lemonade

  • Also @lemonade: this is what I'm getting for my build regarding cable stops.
Mine have dt shifters and no bosses, it's just a clamp on there.

  • and 8 speed chain
This would work fine from what I can see

  • Cheers @Miitch and @Thrust

I think those RivBike clamp on cable stops would only solve half the cable issue though - I'd still need one on the chainstay? On my Pompino I just went for full length housing and zipties and that's worked fine so far.

FWIW, I put 8-speed SRAM MTB bits on miss.ua's bike. Feel free to substitute Shimano MTB (e.g. M360), there's not enough difference to worry about on a shopping bike. I think triggers are more ergonomic than thumbies. On an 8-speed freehub (double check if you haven't already, there was a 7-speed RM40), you also have the option of 9- or 10-speed which may work out cheaper if you're shopping in the bargain bin, depending on what's cluttering up warehouses.

  • Cheers. The sticker on the hub says 'FH RM40 8' -the 8 meaning 8 speed presumably.

This Altus 8 speed trigger a good swap for the thumbies if I go down that route then?

Yes, or you could really cheap out and go 7-speed, just needs a 3mm spacer under the cassette

Big pulleys for lower drivetrain losses, and cheaper than Ceramicspeed too :-)

  • my allroad orlo in a city life mode

  • Full length housing is fine, actually useful as dirt won't be able to get in easily in the long run, and cheaper than buying cable stop.

  • Indexed mean you need a specific shifters, with friction shifter, you can just about fit anything.

SJS sell some really cheap Shimano thumbie that work well, or the plastic £4 Sunrace one that come in either 5, 6 or 7 speed (latter is better as you can find and fit those cassette on modern hubs with spacers).

That, cheap Shimano derailleur and you got yourself a reliable and cheap system, any derailleur work with it, from 7 speed to even 10 speed road (MTB 10 speed, MTB shadow, Tiagra 4700 and the 11 speed won't work

@lemonade that apply to you too.
