Ta for the pointers to Holborn/Bikefix gentlefolk.
Super, thanks. So, I took a stroll up to Bikefix, Fork in hand, explained problem. Helpful fella explained that they can try but the thread doesn't always cut clean. I accepted the risk and asked 'em to go ahead and try it. 20 mins or so apologetic mechanic came back with only a partially successful extended thread cut, it somehow tapered inwards just where the new thread started which also happens to be the point where the adjustment nut needs to sit (naturally). The adjustable race is 'loose' on that part of the thread and wont tighten enough to allow setting the play in the headset, it jumps the thread. Meh.
Bum.
Stuck with a fork with narrow waisted thread now, bum again. And other rude words its very bad to say.

Options? I'm stuck.
I've copied this onto my waffley ol' Dawes thread to save clogging up this thread out of politeness so any other ideas will be gratefully received over here -> https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/231778/?offset=50#comment13089863
