You might be surprised at how few copper coins are made from copper - try running a magnet across your loose change... ... not that ants carry magnets?
"Copper" 1p and 2p coins do contain copper, but the bulk of the material is Nickel, which is harder and (AFAIK) cheaper.
I think many are now copper plated steel? Probably makes little difference to ants!
