  • Decided I'm gonna relic my Tokai Les Paul TV (cuz I'm bored with it looking so new), not sure I'm gonna go totally down the Thunders route but it is tempting, I just wanna knock the shine back and put a few dings in it... Tim at Tym's has a 1985 Custom Shop R4 that he bought off some Japanese punk rock kid and I swear it looks about a hundred years old, the crazing on the gold paint is magnificent... So I'm gonna try out the leave it next to a sunny window then hair drier/air duster spray technique...

Don't think I'm gonna go this far...

This is what she looks like now, 15 years old and barely a mark on her... Just ordered another Mick Brierley P90 for it and changing the knobs, wrapover, truss rod cover (and maybe pegs, tho I might just stick Grovers on there) to OG style...

  • ^ I vote Remain...

  • Likewise.

I don't get this whole "relicing" thing, why try to make / give a guitar un-natural history or usage?

Even Fender are selling brand new (and expensive) "reliced" guitars.......why???

Buy a old / heavily used one, or GTFO!

  • I get it, but then I kind of think that most guitar shops would benefit from having a mirror in them...

No real difference between having a favourite colour or a preference for crazy grained woods is there?

Is the Tokai a nitro finish? there's the freezer trick, though I'm not sure that cracks in an age appropriate way. Gil Yaron attacks the finish with a razor to put scratches in - somewhat labour intensive but amazing results.

edit: thinking about it - with a set neck I'm not sure how you'd get it in the freezer :)

  • Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • A little research made me think it was nitro, however...

Turns out it's most likely poly...

As you were... At least it'll sound better with the new P90... I've had this from new and it still looks spankers...

  • I'm back... I'm gonna try rubbing the finish back a tiny bit and leave it at that...

Next question... I've got a very old acoustic, no truss rod fitted and the action has come up quite a bit since I last played it... How can this be fixed? Would be awesome to avoid resetting the neck but I have a horrible feeling that may be impossible...

    Thoughts?

  • PS Tried the hairdryer/canned air trick on the back of the junior to satisfy my curiosity... Not a sausage of difference... 😬

  • none of you will ever be Kane Roberts awesome. NONE OF YOU.

  • Picked up a Trace Elliot Series 6 AH100 probably 12 years ago, can't remember how old it was when I got it. Anyway, it's been sat in a case for the last 6 years, assuming it still works (fine the last time I used it...) is it still worth anything? Can't find much info about them online.

Would love to keep it but possibly having to ship it half-way around the world seems like too much hassle.

  • Still a lot of love for Trace gear out there. Deffo worth something to somebody.

  • Yup. I have a Trace preamp in a loft somewhere.

Thinking about getting the little Guild refinished on the cheap. Had a nice thin gloss finish on (not sure what) but I wanted the pickguard off. It wasn't finished underneath so after removing it I rubbed down the top and back. Haven't got round to the sides and headstock yet. I'd like someone to strip and refinish it. Any ideas?

  • TS... what gauge strings are on the Kalamazoo? Could maybe go lighter to ease off on tension a bit and then lower the saddle a touch, might make it playable without surgery. Humidity's okay in Brissie isn't it... 50-60%?

@Apone ... sadly no idea if an affordable acoustic refinish exists...

  • Hmmmm. It's a sweet little guitar but not worth spending big money on. Might leave it as is. Put a set of .013 - 63 silk wrapped bronze strings on it at the weekend and tuned it to to CGCGCD. Been learning a few Nic Jones tunes. Sounds great.

  • They might be 11s, but could be 10s... Threw out the packet today but they deffo feel like 11s...

The guy I'm gonna take it to is super experienced with old acoustics, he collects parlour guitars so I think I'm in good hands... Let's see what he says...

In other news, my guitar wrenching is even worse than my bike mangling... 😂

  • No, you're a knob, etc..

  • I'm almost done on my most recent build.. just the electrics and fretwork to go really. It'll have a mint pickguard rather than the white one (and one that fits a little better than the one pictured) and probably some BKPs.

Pretty happy with how it looks (though obviously, as usual, there are always little areas close up that irk, and that possibly only I can see :)). Hollowed out Ash body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard. Pleasantly lightweight, very much looking forward to hearing it.

Have to start thinking about my next project over the next few weeks, pretty sure I've got a LP goldtop itch to scratch.

  • Nice!
I cut and routed my strat body yesterday in the garden and got very sunburnt. Those templates you sent were excellent.
Got a lot more sanding to do now (to cover a few mistakes) but nothing that won't be covered by the paint I hope, and its a quiet enough job I can take my time while the kid is sleeping.
I think I have bought everything but machine heads now.
Lookng forward to pluggin it in!

  • That's awesome - glad they're of use. Amazing weather for it too. Had a couple of hours in the shed at the weekend but it was mostly sanding / paint flattening so incredibly hot work :)

  • Did anybody here try the MXR M300 reverb yet?

  • What bridge and pickups for the tele build mr spaceman?

  • The bridge is a Wilkinson compensated one - wasn't really sure what to put there so if anyone's got any better suggestions feel free to pipe up. The pickups are likely to be Bare Knuckle Bosses.

I've been quite inspired by the wiring / internals of these http://www.taoguitars.com/ - they're ridiculous. I'd like to put a bit of effort into making it look nice, but likely it will just end up being my usual scrappy soldering effort!

  • I have a Glendale compensated three brass saddle bridge which I ordered from the states as at the time he (Dale) was the only guy making compensated ye-olde style bridges that you could fit straight onto the American Standard which, for some reason, they made differently from every other standard Squier, Mex and re-issue.

    http://www.glendaleguitars.com/glendale20.htm

I fricken love it. It's thin, tinny, clucky and twangy*

*also the names of my four children

  • My tele is a 2001 which I bought "nearly new" in 2002. Fitted the bridge that year I think. Haven't touched it since. It intonates perfectly, sounds great, I never break strings and it stays in tune fine. Dig.
