  • Mind you it's going to get silly if he ends up denying he gave it whilst the other 27 states say that he did.

    Fuck.

  • Where are you getting this from? got a link?

  • I don't want to lose my EU membership, this is annoying.

  • Tomorrow is the other 27 without us. Today is Dave and co saying we have no authority as we're off you know.

  • Ok, why don't we have a referendum to decide whether there should be another EU referendum?

  • We need a referendum to decide what questions would be asked in the next referendum.

  • On my phone, but clause 5 of the EP's response today. They've said they expect Cameron's meetings today/tomorrow to indicate formal notice of the referendum result, and thus start the process.

  • At the same time Juncker has told his people to make/accept no contact with London. There will be nothing informal.

  • Proper order.
This 'They can do nothing until we decree it' bullshit. Bet you anything Britain gets amputated damned fast.

  • Cameron in official meetings with EU, in which, obviously, the referendum comes up. "this process will launch the withdrawal procedure."

I think Cameron's best bet is to head back to London or risk accidentally starting negotiations!

  • If the EP say we have resigned when we have not formally resigned they will open the door for protracted legal arguments which could delay our resigning until after those have concluded.

Arguably since Cameron has stood down and stated in our parliament that his successor is responsible for notifying the EP, he no longer has the authority to resign and nothing he now says can be taken as our resignation. Arguably he could resign. But resolving that would take more time than waiting for PM Hunt to be selected and to hand in our notice.

  • Cameron has not stood down.

  • I bet the muppets who drafted article 50 wish it was a bit more precise now.

  • Unfortunately for them, the ball is clearly in the UK governments court.

  • 'expects'

    cheers for linking.

  • He's stood down from any responsibility for implementing the result. He's made a statement to parliament to that effect so removed any ambiguity for anything he says today to be misinterpreted as our resignation.

  • Expects to notify them of the outcome of the referendum, not expects him to notify them of his intention to start negotiating exit.

I bet the former comes up in a conversation.

Having said that, I don't know what power the EP has here.

  • He's the prime minister. He's going to Europe to discuss the results of the referendum. Everything else is just something he's said, not official.

  • Playing the tactics on this, I'm not sure why we are waiving our right to participate in any EU meetings or sessions. I think the position I would take would be, if we can't have informal negotiations, you can't have meetings behind our backs to prepare your strategy.

  • that's fucking horrible.

  • Unless it's said in a statement to parliament, then it becomes official.

  • What does that even mean in terms of "official"? Official what? A lot of BS is said in parliament.

  • What aim does dragging this out serve? Why is Cameron refusing to start the process? Surely it's best to get this over and done? I fear that this will drag on and on, like overtaking in a Renault Megane:

“With a mere ninety break-horse-power available, progress is too leisurely to be called fast, but on the motorway in fifth gear the Megane’s slow pace really becomes a pain. Uphill runs become power-sappingly mundane, while overtaking National Express coaches can become a long, drawn-out affair.”

  • Belgium went 589 days (global record) without an elected government or coalition in control in 2010-2011. I reckon the our bellwhiffs could match or better that..
