Replacement steel inserts on aluminium dropouts

Posted on
  • I have had a search but nothing came up. I am about to sell my old langster to a friend but noticed yesterday that the steel inserts on the aluminium dropouts are completely bent and missing their screws. i changed my rear innertube and they both fell off. I only got them back on by clinching them in place with the buts.

The fact that the steel has bent and gone thin with the pressure of the nuts tells me that I shouldn't just throw them away and bolt straight to the weaker aluminium.

Has anyone got any suggestions about buying or making new ones? I can't find them for sale anywhere. I'm sure it would be easy enough to make some but it's getting hold of the tools.

  • Hi, I bought some from Edinburgh Bicycles only on Friday for £9.75.

I've had a quick look on their site but now can't find them - maybe they are waiting to restock?

    Here's their website - http://www.edinburghbicycle.com/comms/srv.a4d?f%5Fpg=home%2Ehtm&f%5FCardinal=1

Maybe give them a call to check status?

    Good luck, Col.

  • nice one spuds!

what did you search for when trying to find them? where they specific to the langster or does someone make a generic one?

  • They're specific Specialized Langster 07 replacement dropouts. I googled exactly that and it dumped me at the Edinburgh site.

If they have/had them, others most certainly will be able to get hold of them.

I'll check the packaging later to see if there's a parts ref. number.

  • Just checked - bag has no label.

Give Edinburgh a call, they may be waiting to restock.

  • I have noticed that my Alu frame does not have any inserts. I have UTFSd the internetz and all it can say is "Buy this full bike, it has stainless steel inserts". Can someone help.

  • lolwut

  • Ok, well, let me try again Josh...

I have an bike, make from aluminum, which is softer than stainless steel. This is a track frame so the drop outs are track forks.
Sometimes, aluminum bikes, with track forks have slightly recessed area that accept inserts.
These inserts are normally sold on aluminum track frames because they are tougher and harder wearing. This is designed like this to protect the aluminum.
Only place that i can find these said inserts are on complete bikes and are sold as one of the benefits of these track bikes.
I need replacement inserts... My bike did not come with them but has the place for them and i would like to protect my frame like it was intended...

  • What bike do you have Mr Braker?

I'm bored at work so can trawl the netz to see what I can find for you. Alternatively you could find a local metal warker to knock you some up.

  • ring the manufacturer/distributor?

  • well there you go

  • no, the demon possessed is steel.

its made by planet X but its a custom though. the idea of a metal warker sounds like a good idea. You know anyone that can whip up some plates???

  • Yes, but I'm not in London. Give Planet X a call, they are generally very helpful.

  • Hi, anyone can help out how to get my old aluminium dropout plates out so i can install new ones?

    Cheers
