He may be unelectable, but I have seen zero evidence of this.
They said he was unelectable before he was elected as leader.
He first stood in 1983 and was elected. He has been ever since.
As far as I can tell he's never lost an election.

Oh, he's unelectable, all right. I like what he stands for but he's not particularly flexible and his views on defence and immigration, and probably on law and order, probably means he's too high risk for the majority. Really, it's only his economic policies that appeal, and even then the middle-classes will proceed with caution.
