  • Finally spoke to the mechanic who looks after it, he fully agrees with Fixedwheelnut - either a blocked breather or the fuel pump is toast.

    I'll ask Matt to pop the filler cap, and if that doesn't work a car-park based pump replacement.

  • I've changed my mind looking at the engine pic. I reckon the air/fuel mix is fucking up - vapourising/condensing/something - as the temperature changes when it passes over the hot engine.

    Wrap the black and purple hoses in that shiny blanket heat shield stuff and cut a fuck off hole in the top of the bonnet.

  • At 70mph I don't think that the air is going to be hot:

  • I was thinking of the change in temp from super-cold mega-intercooled intake air to dense and warm over-the-engine post-blower air.

  • Ah, air is going the other way - turbo is between the engine and the firewall, air comes in from the air-filter, compressed and heated by the turbo there, travels over the top of the engine into the intercooler, then chilly and dense air goes from the bottom of the intercooler directly into the throttle body, which is between the engine and the rad/intercooler pack.

  • Have you considered killing the car to death then buying a 5y/o 1.6 tdi A3?

  • New one or C6 model? I'm going C6 - a V10 twin turbo has to be better than a piddly V8 twin turbo, no matter what the figures say.

  • I'll buy the Volvo for cheaps. Maybe.

  • It's not just about size, what if there is something blocking it inside, it isn't flowing correctly, etc allowing heat to build up. The only way of knowing is measuring post intercooler IATs
