I heard that from one of my students, who is a Leave volunteer in Tottenham, of all places. They didn't have many volunteers at first, but then realised they had a bit more support on the doorstep than they anticipated, and put more resources there.
I don't think (with the Leave campaign anyway) it's just a case of people wandering round their neighbourhoods, it seems a lot more targeted and well-drilled than that. Which is worrying.

I suspect the cause and effect is backwards there. Areas with a lot of remain voters will have more volunteers. When I looked at volunteering they offer locations based on proximity to your home post code.
