• Hi All, I just picked up a bike which came with a 7 speed Shimano hub gear with coaster brake, a Shimano Nexus SG-7C22 Inter 7 hub. This was originally paired with a Shimano SB-7S40 brake lever/twist gear shifter combo unit.

The shifter is damaged beyond repair though and I've found an exact replacement, but my question is can I use a different 7 speed Nexus shifter with this specific hub? Possibly a different 7 speed Nexus twist shifter or preferably a 7 speed trigger shifter?

I've no idea about the indexing on hub gears, but I don't really like twist shifters and would also like to fit a separate better lever to run a v-brake, as the original front brake is a cantilever set up.

Any help would be really appreciated, cheers Kev.

  • This is the sort of shifter I'd rather use if possible....

  • I think the ST-7S20 is what you would be looking for.

I run the 8 speed version and the brake leaver is switch-able between canti and V brakes, so check yours.

  • Ah interesting, well I know the existing SB-7S40 shifter will work with the hub I have, will check if it's switchable that would be cool. My main query is whether you can mix Nexus hubs and shifters? Any thoughts? The trigger shifter you mentioned looks good though...

  • no only the SB-7S** series will work with it.

You may be able to find a after market company making a shifter for it or hack it with pulley mechs, but its unlikely to work.

    (in my understanding)

  • Thanks for the reply, that's annoying, I was hoping Nexus 7 speed would be more interchangable, but sticking with the original shifter model is no disaster...

  • There's a chart on Sheldon's site that gives the pull lengths for al hub gears hold on...

  • Here we go.

Given that there's only 1 entry for 7 speed Nexus, I'd say you could assume the cable pull didn't change for different iterations of the hub. I could be wrong though...

  • Nice one, thanks very much for that, I did notice it but didn't make sense of it at first glance, will have a proper look though, cheers again!

  • In the end I picked up one of those Nexus 7 speed trigger shifters and it works with the hub I have no problem, so it seems as least for 7 speed Nexus set ups that the varying hubs and shifters are compatible, happy days!

I also have an 8 speed Nexus hub, it needs lacing into a rim, but once built will be looking to find an 8 speed Nexus trigger shifter for it as well, so will report back, thanks for all the replies.

  • Heads up, the nexus 8 speed is compatible with alfine 8 speed shifters too.

I have the nexus 8 with twist shift but want to go trigger shift, let me know how it goes and if it still catches between gears when shifting.

  • Ah interesting, I did have a look for Nexus 8 speed rapidshifters but only found Afine shifters, so was wondering if they're compatible. How did you discover they're compatible?

  • How did you discover they're compatible?

    Here we go.

  • It has been posted on a few forums

  • Thanks for the replies gents....

  • The trigger shifter is fully compatible with the nexus 7 hub. I ordered one from amazon Germany. Arrived today and fitted in 20 minutes. All gears work perfectly. I just used the existing outer cable and fed the new inner cable that comes with the trigger shifter. One thing g to remember before removing the nut on the existing cable is to measure the distance from the outer cable to the nut. It should be about 10 mm. When you feed the new cable through the outer just attach the nut back on at the same distance and everything should work. Here is the link to the one I bought. https://www.amazon.de/SHIMANO-RAPIDFIRE-SCHALTHEBEL-NEXUS-SL7S50220LLL/dp/B00J82US0I?ie=UTF8&ref_=pe_386171_142312251_TE_item

  • Hi

I know that this post is probably over, but I have some questions you could be able to answer... I really don't find any answer anywhere :/

@GreatSince78 you said that you "picked up one of those Nexus 7 speed trigger shifters" and that it worked with your Nexus 7 internal gears hub. Do you have the reference number/model of the shifter you took please?

And do someone know if I can (and where) find any shifter for my Nexus 7 internal gears hub, for 25,4mm diameter handlebars ??

This would save my life !

dont think 7 speed for 25.4 bars exist. you might be able to bodge a rapidfire type shifter onto 25.4 bars.
