Garmin Touring vs Phone apps vs ?

Posted on
  • Thinking about getting a Garmin Touring - if anyone has one they want rid of get in touch asap!

But - I was also wondering if anyone had any recommendations of apps, or alternative gps units that are good for touring?

  • I'd suggest you save your money and just use your phone with an offline maps app. Probably a better option, particularly for charging and keeping your number of carried possessions lower.
Anyway, I'll leave it to the pros..

  • I used view ranger with the Open Cycle maps in the French Alps last year. Worked well.

  • I use runtastic maps with their bike mount for iPhone. Not particularly well made but I've found it super useful and the app itself uses open cycle which is nice (it will also do cadence, pace etc etc if you want/need/have bluetooth kit)

  • I'm also having this dilemma. I want to be able to create routes and have some basic navigation without carrying maps around. Currently looking at day rides, a-b and might extend to some longer efforts stopping off places overnight (ie no camping).

I've looked at a Garmin 1000 but I'm reluctant to spend that money on another GPS device, particularly one with a lot of quite poor reviews.

So I am thinking of either creating cue sheets and then using phone as hoc when I inevitably get lost, or else using the phone for actual navigation and taking an extended battery pack.

    Any advice on either option?

  • Also, any recs for a decent phone bar mount? It's a MotoG.

  • The best phone mount IMO is the QuadLock. I have one with the sticky universal mount on my xperia and it's rock solid.

When I did a 4-day trip in the Netherlands I just used strava+phone for routes. Took an external battery as backup but didn't really need it as my phone could handle the ~6 hours of riding a day without dying. Maybe a dedicated device like the edge touring might be better, particularly in a less cycling friendly place than the Netherlands, but strava routes + phone is what I had to hand and I had no issues at all.

  • Use something like OSMAND which gives you offline mapping. You can display a gpx route/course/track on the map. You can then either use this to actively navigate you or use it as a reference when at junctions etc. The difference between the two options is battery life.
The garmin touring is badly misnamed and almost any other garmin with maps is better for touring.

    And in passive mode

  • Thanks @Colonel_of_Truth and @freezing77, will check both of those out.

Phone solution is appealing and I have a battery pack which will do multiple recharges so should be pretty reliable using off line maps.
