OSM maps are smaller (and tuneable for locations) but my experience with the 810 suggests that Garmin maps are more reliable in actual use so I will be using Garmin maps, loathe though I am to give those shits more money.

I've just downloaded the OSM one and it comes out at just 815 Mb. Guess I needn't have worried about needing big cards.
Garmin Europe was ~7gb but I don't recall how much of that was useless shit. Might be potential to strip it down.
