Is it a really bad idea to file out front fork ends to take a track hub? I assume there's no going back to quick release hubs afterwards? Thanks!

There should not be any difference, unless you have a very old fork which was built for something other than 9mm or 3/8" axles, and then your QR axle wouldn't fit anyway.
