  • Yeah, I see 'em now.

    1 Garmin? Rookie...

  • I only took 1 garmin last year.
I debated a 2nd a long time. But I had a phone with a map system on it. With the route on the map app.

  • I'll likely take 2 Garmins, phone with maps, maybe a town list on paper or something though I'm so far behind on this shit I'll proabbly forget.

Didn't yours die and you had to use a spare SD card?

  • Yeah. It did die. So I rebooted it and put in my spare sd card.
I learnt that lesson back in 2014 when my garmin shat itself and also wiped the sd card

  • Skimmed most recent posts but I'm right in thinking there's a sprint finish after 17days/4000+miles? Sounds more exciting than the previous races where it was pretty much decided with a couple of states to go...

  • Long range sprint. Lael has a few miles up on SS now.

  • sweet, thanks!

  • Got to make up for all my spamming.

  • Steffen at the gas station live now, https://www.facebook.com/TransAmBikeRace/

  • By my estimate, Lael only has about 3 miles on Steffen right now, he's faster on the road generally.

  • I've never had that, thankfully. Lots of other issues though :)

  • I took a spare Garmin on TD, didn't need it, but wouldn't have wanted to be messing about with my phone as a backup unless it was an absolute last resort. I've had my Garmin 800 die on normal rides many times, I was just lucky it didn't on TD. It did auto-delete the first days recording when the memory was full though, I should have backed it up, or saved to SD and switched to a spare halfway or something. Next time...

  • Forgotten how unrewarding it is watching the race unfold on trackleaders.

They're right next to each other!
    5 minutes later...They're miles apart.
10 minutes later...They're right near each other!
    15 minutes later...Person X's tracker stops working
    20 minutes later...Person Y's tracker stops working
    ...etc...

  • +1

It's the SPOTs that are the issue here, they are set to either 5 or 10 minute update intervals, and often in treecover, don't get a response from the satellite. Best thing to do will be to watch live from the end in Yorktown on FB...

  • How big was the SD you were using? I wonder what the max size is? From memory (lol) I have a 4gb in the 800 and an 8gb or 16gb in the 1000 because the 1000 has bigger maps installed on it that take up almost 8gb by themselves.

  • I bought a couple of 32gb cards the other day. I think I saw 64s but didn't think I'd need them.

  • I guess it depends on the maps - any idea what Garmin map size will be required for the whole route? Shit, I've only got Europe I think, probably doesn't include Turkey, etc. so I'll need to buy that as well. So maybe 16gb of maps at the most? Hmm..

  • I was saving to the internal memory, dickhead that I am.

  • Yeah, 800s have fuck all free space. 1000s have quite a bit of space free, even with their factory maps installed so you could probably get away with it in that case. I've got some SD cards at home for the etrex, Garmin 800 and 1000. Maybe I'll just take the etrex and the 1000 and leave the 800 at home. I do like an electronic comfort blanket though...

  • DK - not downloaded them yet.
I'll just get the free OSM ones and download a strip covering where I'm going, not the whole countries. I don't expect them to be too massive.

  • OSM maps are smaller (and tuneable for locations) but my experience with the 810 suggests that Garmin maps are more reliable in actual use so I will be using Garmin maps, loathe though I am to give those shits more money.

  • The OSM ones aren't ideal as I find the colours in urban areas are too similar to the pink line. Myabe I should buy the Garmin ones.

  • If you're going to buy Garmin ones then I'd take both. The OSM ones just cost the price of the SD card.

  • Good idea. Many backup. Such redundancy.

  • When the Garmin maps take down the Edge 1000 you'll have the OSM maps to put in the Edge 800 to take that one down too. #flailover
